Re: Drumming Addiction and Withdrawals

I just found this thread (I lurk a lot, but never post)...My story is a lot like the OPs...I started at 7 and started sitting in with bands at 10. Had my own band at 14 and played with several bands...

Re: Life After Drumming?

Way back when, we never used hearing protection. Between cymbal crashes, and sitting in front of huge amplifiers, it's a wonder I can hear anything at all. One time when I was a teen, a buddy put...

Re: Just like riding a bike..?

After reading all of these posts, I'm starting to wonder when we start getting senior discounts on drum equipment! :D

Maybe it is kinda like riding a bike! I tripped over my throne the other night...

Re: Life After Drumming?

I'm about 10 years behind you, but I know from which you speak. Arthritic knees and ankles, a bad rotator cuff in one shoulder, etc. I don't think I'll ever be without a kit again, even if it's only...

Re: What kind of drummer are you?

An old "never was" drummer that used to be a jack of all trades, but after a many year layoff is now a bloody awful recreational drummer. Biggest concern now is laying down a good solid groove....

Re: Weekend Warriors? The older drummer thread...

Hey Barry!

I like that idea about wearing advertising to attract a little attention. Maybe a small tasteful window decal on the rear window or something along those lines.

Old Doc Yak! You're...

Re: Weekend Warriors? The older drummer thread...

Man! I'm over 50 years old. I don't even know where most of these guys live anymore. None of us live in the old neighborhood. Most aren't even in the state. A couple are even dead. A couple went on...

Boy! You ain't just a-woofin'!!!

Paralysis through analysis...

My thoughts about Craigslist over open jams is that at least in the ad, you can set the right expectations. In an open jam, you're...

Weekend Warriors? The older drummer thread...

The older drummer thread and a recent audition hit a nerve and started the wheels turning. After many years of inactivity, I went to the audition and bombed pretty badly. I hadn't played with a group...

Re: Do you play more than one instrument? Not like this...

I know a guy like that. Is an absolute wizard on anything with strings (including piano). The only thing I haven't seen him play (yet) is drums. I wouldn't bet against him.

Actually know a couple...

Re: Your first time playing a show

The first time I every played in front of a crowd, I was 10 and sat in with a band playing at a CB Radio Jamboree. There were probably 300 people in this huge tent. The band thought it would be cute...

Re: Us older drummers

Back in the day, there were always visions of finding the right group of guys to actually go somewhere with our music. Closest I ever got was a couple of gospel records and a little studio work....

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

Throw me in that briar patch too! I just started back after not playing since the late 70s. Now I'm teaching my grandkids to play. My biggest problems since starting back are single stick rolls,...

Man, you must be single!

For me, at this point, it is just a hobby. Unfortunately, all of my hobbies can get rather expensive. I'll keep niggling away and searching eBay and pawn shops and...

How do you justify expenditures?

Just getting back into drumming after many years' layoff. Bought a cheap used kit from a guy for less than $100 with the <ahem> idea of teaching my kids to play. Of course now that I've got them, I...

Re: VFW/American Legion/Moose Lodge Gigs

We used to play a couple of VFW gigs a year. Usually around $200 a night. Like mrchttr, the pay isn't that good, but it's better than doing nothing. Be prepared to play a lot of older dance music. If...

Re: What First Inspired You

I always had older cousins and uncles that played. As soon as I saw that first drum kit (I was 6), I knew that's what I wanted to do. I got a snare drum and a rudiment book for Christmas and spent...

Re: Can anyone identify these old drums?

Somebody on another forum said the bass looks like an old slingerland. The mounted tom might be an old tenor snare. Can't tell anything about the snare until I get some new pics.

Probably not...
