Re: THE GOOD SNARE THREAD

Honestly, while I have a preference to specific drums based on their quality I also believe that if you the drummer have good technique and are clever with a drum key and a quality drum head that you...

Re: Are you self sufficient?

Bottom line: Work builds character, regardless of who you are. Real adults have some type of profession to help them create and sustain a life and to live that life independently. If you are blessed...

Re: The Big Kits vs. Small Kits Debate

It's not a problem if the big kit user actually uses the kit. Some say that you can do it all on a 4 piece and that's true to a certain degree. There are types of music that need more sounds. Not...

Re: Bass drum head tension

I hate a thud in someone's sound but I understand the necessity of it when a drummer plays speed metal.

I totally believe in making the kick have a sound, even if you use dampening. I like EMAD...

Re: Clive Vs Nicko

Clive Burr is a great drummer and had his own style. It is rare for a band to find two drummers that are so different and indetifiable. With that said though, I think Nicko is far better just because...

Re: 4 Way Independence help? :)

Also, wake up your left foot. Are you a double bass player? if not, do it! Start working on sticking patterns with your feet and start doing these exercises by leading with your left foot. It causes...

Re: odd-time hi-hat pedal work

Aside from repetitive practice how much do you listen to progressive/odd meter music? Getting the clave is one thing but feeling it is another. You can help by listening to latin jazz.

I would...

Re: Middle Finger Fulcrum

I learned to play this way and will never go back. There's a reason why it's your middle finger! The lever point is in the middle of your hand.

I remember in college: my teacher told me that I...

Re: Matched Grip vs. Traditional Grip: Pro's and Con's?

Thomas Lang once said that he liked the way he approached the drums when he played traditional grip so that's fine with me. For the longest time I didn't use double bass because I didn't like my...

Re: What Is The Purpose Of Drum Solos?

So then we agree? But you're not addressing the fact that someone does something different, especially when it even requires new gear.

Re: Left foot independence

Practice! Regardless of what you do, work on the pattern slowly and just take your time. Some things take more time than others but there is no secret formula. But the more you do it the easier it...

Re: Drumming and the Recession

Absolutely! But I still have a regular job so it hasn't been too bad. But I still get gigs and other things here and there. In my opinion, artists need to be realistic. Get some kind of certification...

Re: How to become a fairly well-known Session Drummer

I am no Vinnie Colaiuta but in my hometown of Tucson, AZ I am one of the local on call guys at multiple local studios. What I did before moving here was email all of the studios and send them links...

There's a difference between style and repetition.

Re: What Is The Purpose Of Drum Solos?

You're right but you have to also give me the same consideration in how I judge things. One man's garbage is another man's treaure, right? And yes, this is a subjective discussion and that means I...

Re: No twirling or soling - rather be a musician than entertainer

Of course Gadd has his own feel, I never denied that. I was talking about players that do the same old thing every night. Maybe you like it, I don't. I want to see something new and creative,...

Re: What Is The Purpose Of Drum Solos?

It depends...if you have something creative to play then it's art. If you're making noise it's just a solo. Most drum solos are noise because it's just the same old hits on the toms or cymbals off of...

Re: No twirling or soling - rather be a musician than entertainer

Familiarity is good but then why buy a CD or pay to go to a clinic when you've seen or heard it before. Why not add to the set? Bands tour and play the old hits but aren't they also promoting new...

Re: In your opinion, what makes the difference between intermediate and advanced drum

Wait, wait, wait....Again, is it ability or attitude? What if you're a monster player but have a bad attitude that no one wants to work with you? And with all of that ability you refuse to play what...

Re: No twirling or soling - rather be a musician than entertainer

Finally, someone that listens to one's drumming and just the hype.

Steve Gadd, God Bless him, a songwriter's drummer, not Ringo (more hype) and that's his gig and he's great at what he does. But,...

Re: STICK CONTROL (george L stone) your experiences and suggestions

A great book and I have used it for years. You can vary the temps and of course modulate the meter to make exercises you've mastered even more challenging.

In my opinion though, use it like...

Re: Metronomes: Yay or Nay?

Yay, absolutely. No one has perfect timing and the more you practice to a metronome or drum machine for that matter the better your playing.

Plus, what if you want to get session work? There will...

Re: No twirling or soling - rather be a musician than entertainer

Drummers like Lang and company usually add twirls to their drumming. But I'm sure when they do sessions and stuff they do their job.
