Re: A few recording questions

I get that with the floor tom all the time. Doesn't really bother me, it just makes the kick boom more :)

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Haha, cool!

Funny thing about the rubber that I noticed. It smells like, well, like rubber should. But if I touch it with my hands my fingers smell really funny.

Yup.

Re: Vintage stuff. Period.

Maybe I understood something wrong, but are you asking why would someone prefer cassettes or records over digital? I listen to records daily, and have a 4-track cassette recorder set up next to my...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

I bought a practice pad this week. It's my first pad ever, I used to think you don't need to practice at home.. Silly me!

My kids love it, they stood in line taking turns to see who could drum the...

Re: John McLaughlin: Miles Had No Paper Bags, No Chords

Great links, thanks!

Love this quote:

I said, “Listen, this is a piano part. Do you want the chords and the melody?” I was sweating so hard my clothes were soaked. That’s when he said, “Play...

Re: 24" bass drum - 10" main snare, surely not?

Interesting sizes.
I could see myself playing some hiphop/breakbeat -type of stuff with that kit.

And of course, the drums sound good, as expected!

Re: First time studio experience recording drums

Haha, yeah, I have to have comfy clothes on while playing so I make sure to bring some with me. A pair of shorts and a worn pair of Rod Lavers will do.

Thanks for the compliment!

First time studio experience recording drums

A few weeks ago I was asked to play drums for one cut for an upcoming record for a friend of mine. I have played other instruments and sang but I had never played drums on a recording session before...

Re: D'Angelo - Black Messiah

Still waiting for the damn vinyl to drop..

Promised myself to hold on from listening until I get it on wax. I have heard a few cuts on the radio and they did sound good, oh yes!

On a side...

Re: Guru Steambent English Cherry Snare

Beautiful!

I especially like the look of the lugs, I think Guru did well to not make them look like just another tube lug, but yet they have that classic vibe to them.

Conratulations on the...

Re: Micing my kit with 3 mics

Yes, it is a different approach and will yield different results. Not better or worse, but different.

Now, whatever technique is the right one for the situation you happen to be in, that's another...

Re: Thinking about buying a Ludwig Vistalite kit. Thoughts?

I have a set of older Vistas, and they are really good for loud rock type stuff.
The thing about them being loud - I'd say they're not that much louder than your basic ply drums, but they kind of...

Re: Micing my kit with 3 mics

To each their own. No solution is better than the other, they're all just different tools for different purposes

If you're into that kind of sound it's all well and good, but more mics does not...

Re: Garbage Percussion

Yeah... Don't you just hate it when people have their focus on the show, instead of finding meaningless little things to bitch about?

Re: Garbage Percussion

It is!

Too often we only make the machines do what we want. I think it's a good thing that you are giving the machine the opportunity to play what it wants for once :)

Re: Garbage Percussion

I have an AKAI MPC 2000XL sampler that I use to program beats with. Every once in a while it kind of goes into this glitch mode where the screen freezes up and none of the controls function anymore,...

Re: Garbage Percussion

A random sound by itself is not "music" per se, but if I were to record that branch hitting the gutter and loop it on a sampler - then yeah, you could call that music. Or more like a foundation to...

Re: What is resonance, & why does it matter.

Yes, actually it is!
Thank you for taking the time to post this stuff. I might be a bit of a drum nerd but this is all very highly entertaining and informative at the same time.

Re: What is resonance, & why does it matter.

My brain hurts!
This is really interesting, because I would automatically assume a dry drum = a short tone. Maybe the book would be in order. It's not like you have anything else on your to-do-list,...

Re: A new model for record labels?

Hard to find or not, the fact is that luckily there is still a TON of good music out there to be found. In the end that is all that matters.

I for one don't mind having a full-time job and just...

Re: What is resonance, & why does it matter.

Ah, yes - but there's the catch ;) Because I quite happen to like the Acro for the reason that it produces this dry sound.

Resonance - just as you stated earlier - is an option and a...
