Re: Elementary jazz question about accenting on the ride

Yup, And don't forget - the second rule of Jazz Club is: you DO NOT talk about Jazz Club!

Sorry I needed to throw that in there. Great flick

Re: Only6 months left to drum!!

Drumming for me is primarily a hobby, so with a new baby and a wife who does not get the whole drumming thing, I keep a pretty low profile on the kit.

I use pillows sometimes, or the DW practice...

Re: Matt Sorum

Dude, you sure about that?

I know for sure civil war is Adler but Knockin' on heaven's door sure sounds like its Matt Sorum. That's a whole different drum sound and approach.

Adler himself has...

Re: Working Through Stick Control - How?

Interesting

How would you play straight triplets when the first few pages comprise groupings of 8, or 16 if you work across the bar for each #?

Are you suggesting playing the notes with a...

Re: Matt Sorum

Yeah but listen to Use your Illusion and count the songs where this fill is frequently used. It's a lot more than just the ones that Axl requested. Just off the top of my head, I can also name...

Re: Matt Sorum

Yeah, I have heard that story too, but the rest of the album is littered with that fill, so Axl's apparent request doesn't totally explain it.

Matt's a great player, so I am sure there was some...

Re: Matt Sorum

If you like that Pat Boone/Debbie Boone fill, his stuff with GnR will be right up your alley!

Seriously, though, he is a solid player that plays with a lot of power, groove and clarity. Other...

Re: Working Through Stick Control - How?

That's the thing with the great method books like Stick Control, Syncopation, Modern Reading Text, etc. With the right amount of imagination and ingenuity, they will provide a lifetime of use and...

Re: Jazz Drum Solo Sheet Music for Beginners

I'd have to go back through the book (it's been a year or so since I last used it), but I recall there being various solos that were 8th note based where it would be easier to swing.

I agree that...

Re: How do you count while olaying drums?

Drummers who play in a live setting frequently need to count the band in, esp. at the beginning of the song where you need to confirm the correct tempo for others.

This is a skill just like...

Re: Jazz Drum Solo Sheet Music for Beginners

wow - 999? That's crazy. It's an indispensable tool that you will take with you wherever your drum journeys take you, but 999 is a ridiculous price.

I am glad you found a copy. As you start to...

Re: Jazz Drum Solo Sheet Music for Beginners

Wilcoxon's modern rudimental swing solos is a great bridge to using the rudiments you are learning into more of a musical format.

There are about 40 or so solos in increasing level of difficulty....

Re: Blasphemy! - Pic Heavy

I'm in a similar boat to many of you. New baby, easily irritated wife, no $$$ to build a dedicated soundproofed area.

My "solution" was to use the DW practice pad kit which is supplemented by the...

Re: Lasting impressions

I have picked up and quit drums in various phases of my life, but for me two major periods were:

1) in my early teens

- Rush Moving Pictures
- Van Halen (all)
- Buddy Rich (all)

2) Several...

Re: Montreal's Intensive Drumming Day

Great pic of Dom; it's a nice counterpoint to your more serious demeanour!

Good luck with the clinic; I unfortunately no longer live in Montreal. Too many cold winters!

Re: Other songs that sound like other songs

You also have bands that based their entire look/sound/aesthetic on others. Is that not fair game too?

Some that quickly come to mind.

Oasis = Beatles
Jet = AC/DC
Bulletboys = DLR era Van...

Re: Neil Peart

So I guess very few of us would ever be able to provide a bold statement on politicians, professional athletes, corporate CEOs, etc. since all "can do it better" than us. That's a great way to...

Anyone check out his live stream at Ronnie Scotts tonight?

Re: Mike Clark Interview, The Trap Set

Great interview.

So ironic that the Headhunter/Hancock days are not to him a style he feels much connection with. Yet, to me, that represents the pinnacle of his playing career.

Love his other...

Re: Jazz and Matched Grip

Saw him play a few weeks ago. An absolute monster; not enough love for him on this forum. Met him after the show and he's a really engaging and outgoing guy.

Sorry to derail the thread...

Re: Whiplash Oscar win - will it spur sudden interest in "jazz drumming"?

Sadly, the millions of dogs that enter shelters in the US each year attests to the fact that many people don't think things through and neglect the many years of comittment responsible ownership...

Yes - Opeth has been aging like a fine wine. As great as Lopez was, I especially like Martin Axenrot's playing the last few albums. Watershed was, well, a Watershed moment for Opeth and metal music...

Re: Practice!

Good suggestions.

Spend plenty of time on the 40 rudiments. Try to throw in different foot ostinatos to add to the challenge once you get the patterns down to keep your feet engaged.

Although...
