Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

You hit it.

It's as if we all said: "Yeah, let's pay those companies 80 bucks for the right to advertise their product every time we leave the house. "

Regarding drums etc, don't care. Sorry.

Re: Drumming in the pre digital age.

I agree with you. The tech has bettered everything considerably.

Remember when we used to have to ask people for directions, or stop to find a pay phone? It all seems so archaic now.

Re: Drumming in the pre digital age.

I love DW but, truthfully, I sometimes wonder if spending time on the forum isn't taking away from practice time.

The sense of community is great and the exchange of ideas is great but, as Bo...

Re: Who inspires you the most?

Simon Phillips.

The fact that he has now pretty much left arena rock to concentrate on his jazz playing is inspiring. He's aging gracefully like a fine wine.

How many people in the world are a...

Re: What is your drum setup pet peeve?

Normally a "pet peeve" is ONE thing that bugs you about something. You have a whole pet store going on.

I guess we should all just sound like Ringo or something.

No, you didn't upset me, I just...

Re: How tense are you when you play?

Relaxed but not in a "beer on the couch" sort of way.

Muscles not tense, mind clear but both primed for action.

In both athletics and in music there is a time for relaxation and a time for...

Re: Electronic & Acoustic Drums in the same song

Jack and Diane is a classic song that does this. The fills by Kenny Aronoff in that song jump started his career.

Many pop songs out today now follow that formula of electronics during the verse...

Re: Let down by a drummer with chops but no ability

I definitely see this all the time at metal gigs. Guys who can play 240 BPM but hit the snare in a pathetic weak-wristed motion that sounds terrible and has zero groove. .

But what I also see is...

Re: You and your practice regimen, come clean

I practice on the pad approx an hour a day. Since working with Bill Bachman after my injury my technique is really coming along.

Kit time ranges from 0-3 hrs. Much more on weekends.

Total...

Re: What method of drum video critiquing do you go by?

How can I put this kindly?

If questions like these are what you are actually spending more than 5 seconds thinking about you have got it all wrong.

Who cares about what anyone posts on a...

Just sayin..,

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

Ok, fair enough. I think you might look into some physical therapy with massage, exercise etc to help out.

If you want techniques that work untriggered, it has to the flatfoot motion in single...

Re: 18" bass drum for rock!

Trying to make an 18" sound like a 22" is is like a guitar player trying to make an ES-335 hollow body sound like a Les Paul.

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

Both are equally valid philosophies or art.

Take, for example, Ludwig's Ninth vs a jazz improv solo over the form of the tune.

You wouldn't say someone was "planning" or "parroting" the ninth....

Re: What makes a good drum room?

If you check out a drum room in a high end recording studio you might notice that the room is either very large or that it is irregularly shaped.

That is because early reflections off of near...

Re: Personality Influences Playing

You're right, sorry about that.

I think that it's much easier to play things that fit your personality than don't. As a pretty active person, I find playing fast, aggressive music comes easily to...

Here some common factors I notice about players that solo well:

1. They are using a musical form. Whether employing an extremely formal one such as exposition, development and recapitulation of a...

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

I have never played in a cover band. It never appealed to me.
It all comes down to what you want. The points have already pretty much been made.
In the end, we all take what we want and we all pay...

Re: Do you have your own sound?

Cool, I'm of the camp that whatever you choose to do, do it for a reason and with passion. For what you are doing, the wide open kick is ideal. I simply feel that many people are saying this just...

Re: Do you have your own sound?

I have definitely tried to refine my own concept of what I want to sound like and then worked on getting sound that out of me. I can't say that I'm all the way there but I have had producers,...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

I don't get the point of this thread.

1. Guys playing over 220 trigger.

2. Heel toe is not as even sounding as singles.

So what? It changes nothing.

The triggering is necessitated by the...

Re: Drum fads: Past, present...and future?

Left foot clave. The only two guys I ever heard do this well were Antonio Sanchez and Phil Maturano.

Any other left footed block or snare.

Double stoke rolls on double kick. Leave that stuff to...

Re: Left/Right foot independence

Yes, do this. Also add 1/4 notes and offbeat eighth notes to to the fatback exercises and you've got a full plate for a while.
