Re: What's your latest purchase?

Zen-like drumming. Just the pad and sticks and there's a world of learning/fun to do right there :)

Re: Drums and beer at my first ever band tryout!

It was obvious (even to me) that it was becoming more 'jazz' than 'funk' :)

Maybe when i'm as good as Ginger Baker I could have a sherbet or two!

Drums and beer at my first ever band tryout!

Monday night (it seems a *very* long time ago) I had my first ever tryout!

A band (whose drummer is leaving the country) saw my ad on gumtree and asked me to go and have a 'no pressure jam' to see...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Sabian HHX X-Plosion 17" crash.

OK, it's not *that* exotic but I'm really excited to be playing this - it's my first 'proper' crash :)

Anyone know what this bit of percussion kit is?

I was watching a youtube video today of an Amy Winehouse cover (Back to Black) and there is a great trashy tambourine kind of percussion thing on beat 4 of every bar... and now I'm really wanting...

Re: Advice please?

OK, well i've spent two days solid now playing the 7 songs we agreed to 'jam' together over and over again. When i'm having a quiet break I can hear Bryan Adams' voice in my head (which isn't really...

Re: Advice please?

Hey - good advice (and wishes) - thanks :)

If it doesn't work out I'll just have to prepare more next time!

Advice please?

I've been drumming now for less than 2 years. Taking lessons every week, practicing every day, playing along to tracks and really enjoying it. I think that there's not so much point though unless I...

Re: Many cymbals yes, but many snares?

Re: Many cymbals yes, but many snares?

I must admit, I was looking at a Mapex Velvetone or Phatbob - I think the descriptions of their tone is persuasive :)

Re: OCD or normal jacking around?

well *obviously* we're all weird, but I think there's something in the love of patterns, and the level of control, which suggests a fair number of us have a tendency to OCD. Personally I'm as weird...

Re: OCD or normal jacking around?

I thought I was weird when I *had* to have the logos on the cymbals and drums lined up and the cymbals needed to be completely level and flat.

Now I find that my drum teacher is the same - he...

Many cymbals yes, but many snares?

I'm beginning to grow a cymbal obsession. Today's new piece of perfection is a 17 inch Sabian X-plosion HHX. Corr!

So I can see the appeal of having a big collection of cymbals - they all sound so...

Re: What's your story about how you started drumming?

At 39 I decided I wanted to play an instrument and decided to play a flute (!) Took lessons and took it to grade 7. Loved it. Took music theory lessons to grade 5 (you can't do grades 6+ practical...

Re: So...where do you keep your spare sticks?

I had a stick clamp-thing that I clamped to the hi-hat stand but it kept falling off so I just leave them on my second floor tom (which I hardly ever use!)

These days, though I hold my sticks much...

Do you own (or want to own) both acoustic and electric kits?

I'm thinking of buying a second kit. One to practice on when my other half is relaxing and not wanting to hear my painfully poor drumming - so obviously I'd go for an electronic kit. I'm relatively...

Re: Relighting my fire

i had a bit of a bad experience with trying out with a band and it was painfully clear that they were expecting something a lot better. I came away thinking that maybe I should make sure I wasn't...

Relighting my fire

For some inexplicable reason I stopped playing drums about 12 weeks ago - completely lost my mojo.. pretty much no confidence and was stalled at the 'I sort of know what I'm doing but not good enough...

Re: The best reasons to become a drummer?

It's just the feeling - how the sticks feel in your hands, and how it feels on the drum heads. Nothing else is quite like that.

Mind you, i'm slightly worse the wear for beer - I may regret...

Re: Toms with specific pitch - is this a problem

this sounds like good advice...

I'm an ex flute and bass player so I'm more than OK with the theory of harmony, it was just that I wasn't expecting the pitch to be so clear and was a bit surprised...

Toms with specific pitch - is this a problem

I'm loving my new Mapex Saturn, but I've got a question.

My toms have really clear pitch - each tom has a note that is quite recognisable, which is great. But, to my ear, these pitches sometimes...

Re: Drum Lessons

+1

I'm 48 too and have been learning for about 18 months - weekly drum lessons, quite focussed, with about an hour a day (max) practicing. I would be nowhere near where I am now without lessons...

Re: Mapex Saturn IV

Here they are - 10", 12" rack toms, 14" and 16" floor toms, 22x20" bass, and a machete snare for good measure (oh, and TRX drk 16" crash, 18" ride and hats, and Sabian HH raw bell 21" ride and 10"...
