A while back when i did not have a kit i used to do the same thing. Listen to the song / CD over and over again. What i would do is get my drum sticks and tap on my leg simulating the hits etc....

It's all about personal prefrence. Ofcourse some brands don't offer as good quality drums as others. Like you cant compare Pacific with DW. They offer drums at a totally different price range and...

Depends on a lot of things. I would go for Maple probably because it's my prefered choice of sound. But shell thickness / size etc also have an effect on the sound.
