Re: The TRUTH Behind Led Zeppelin: When The Levee Breaks

I'd REALLY love to have that! Maybe post it on your YouTube page & link it here?

Re: Musician vs Artist

I'd go as far as to say we're "artists" as long as we're creating the drum part used in the song from scratch. Now...we all shamelessly steal from the greats in terms of form and technique, but as...

Re: Did recording yourself make you a better player, and how?

I video recorded myself playing to some songs once & I was disgusted at my sloppy form & how the kit wasn't set up to fit me.
I saw myself reaching WAY further than I should've for...

Re: Drum set up for back strength

everything should be easy to get to no matter what you're playing. If you have to do anything mentioned above, tweak the kit until it all works.
I've gone through many set ups and I...

Re: What are cool open-handed set ups?

Thomas Lang plays that way more often than not. He has x-hats on a cable positioned on his right side and will do traditional hat work open style.

Seems a very comfortable way to go about...

Re: Advice on building a drum riser

I saw a great video from a guy who built a soundproof one for his apartment. Suspended the platform on tennis balls and it isolated the shock from the rest of the floor.

Very innovative.

Re: The gig that you turned down, and it's a good thing you did!

Maybe there's a downside here I'm not seeing...=-D

I've done a few audition rounds and one band had me pegged as the one they wanted. Jammed with them for a few rounds and the in-state "tour" was...

Re: Anyone ever switch your "brand loyalty?" (Mid-life crisis for me?)

This is me 100%. I played a lot of "Shit kits" for years before saving enough for my Gretsch. So I've done the gamut of drum brands and shell sizes.
I now have my forever set.

Cymbals however...

Re: Color Matching Snare Drums to kit

Most of the time, the snare is hidden by the rest of the kit. So most people won't see it anyway.
You will, so if it matching it to the kit matters to you, then do it.

Sound is #1 on my list...

Re: Cutting a giant hole in my bass drum's shell

I thought of doing this just below the spur bracket. I use (and love) the KickPort. Always have. I have a cheap kick I just might do this with and see how location affects sound. I'll bend the...

Re: THE MONSTER MARCHING KIT - A whole kit made from marching drums!!!

Re: What do I buy and do?

This is what I did and it's been a great partnership of understanding. Early evening & some weekends of practice are well tolerated.
I do have a set of the Black Hole drum mutes and silent cymbals...

Re: Evoking Emotions through Drums

I find if I'm serving the song right, it does in others more than me. I'm always excited pounding away, others don't always feel that way.

Re: Guess what I left at home?!

I forgot my ride cymbal once. Left it on the kit at home, but I had my crash.
It became a "crash-ride" that night...:-D

Re: How do you practice?

Gigging mainly as I play a lot with a few different bands. I love doing practice pad work as it keeps the hands fluid.

Re: Boxy Sounding Drums?

I’ve used the Evans Hydraulic heads for a long time and if they’re not tuned right, will sound “boxy”.
I’ve learned that any head or muffling system that gives a fat, wet sound will come off that...

Re: Play While Standing Up

I play standing up in my current rockabilly band. Not much need for a hi-hat in my music, but when I do, I have a pair of closed splashes mounted atop my ride. They give me a quieter option for...

Re: Stones backline

Looks like a DW snare at that. I'd like to believe he's played the same Gretsch set up his whole career. Just uses what's needed & nothing else.
A true professional.

Great video!

Re: Why would one need an Endorsement Deal?

Our bass player is endorsed by Gretsch & he tells me that his perks include getting his basses pretty much at cost, and he has the chance to get a new release before it's open to the...

Re: When is a good time to quit a band?

When the thrill is gone.
I've been in bands where we were doing good, then one day it just wasn't fun anymore.
I broke north with no delay.

Re: What's the worst drumming advice you've ever received?

"Don't listen to other drummers. It'll keep you from developing your own style."
I've found that my style developed from bits and pieces of all the drummers I've heard over the years. Everyone...

Re: Solo gigs

I remember a guy in Downtown Disney in California who did drum stuff to pre-recorded music. did pretty well for himself down there, but I haven't seen him in a while.

Re: How long have you been in your working band?

3 years with Dirty Dice/AJ's Rockabilly Ruckus. I've been a hired gun for a few bands in between which I like a lot.

When I got to see him play on Live in Pompeii, I finally could put what I heard with what he was doing. I've been a Floyd fan since the Syd days & have always loved his approach. He was one of my...
