Seriously cool way to bend wood (SCIENCE. YEA!)

Instead of a steam bath to soften the lingum bonds in the wood, this guy uses ammonia. It essentially does the same thing - disrupts the hydrgogen bonding between the lignum structures to temporarily...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

I think that's the point though, isn't it? To be sincere, or at least to be understood, to send clear message. Did Tony Williams play drums as a part of a persona? Does Gadd play the way he does...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

I'll amplify this throat clearing.

I have no problem with weird and different. That's awesome, I dig on people doing different things and reprogramming the way we think.

The difference is that...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

Piano playing and composing is not the definition of a musician, and I never said it was. I only meant to say that because she insists on behaving like a caricature, any serious musical...

Re: Over exuberance - a time & a place?

Definitely not over the top at all. It feels a little frantic though.. Just lay it back a tad and I don't see any reason why you couldn't play that everynight. Sounds great!

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

Yea, she can sing, and she can play. She wasn't bad at the Stevie Wonder tribute show either.

But the Oscars solidified for me that she is a caricature and an act. She wants people to notice her...

Re: Help me understand the reason behind dynasonics and DW's new snare mechanism

Don't mean to resurrect this thread.. just fyi, here is Steve Maxwell explaining this mechanism in detail and showing you how it works.

Re: Hip-Hop feel

To me the biggest idea in hip hop is playing a well balanced groove the same way every time and staying completely rock solid with it. If you watch Questlove play, he uses a very light touch with it....

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

There is a lot really good stuff here. I wish I could thumbs up or quote and comment on everything I love about this thread, but that would be crazy huge post.

In my opinion, the most rampant...

Re: Michel Camilo on drummers ....

You're right. You didn't.

But I get the impression that Michel does think that, based on that video.

Yes. Expressing ideas tastefully and contributing. The musicians that can do that are...

Re: Michel Camilo on drummers ....

Seeing patterns and categorizing information is an important tool for learning and creating, and it shouldn't blindly cast away, because whether you like it or not, we all do it. In fact you are...

Re: Michel Camilo on drummers ....

I normally would wholeheartedly agree with you (Tony) and Mike - but aside from this statement, I don't.

I wouldn't think anyone would disagree with that definition of jazz, in general terms.. but...

Supra > Acro

I've been using an 1976 Acro for a few years, and its been my favorite snare all of that time. This is true for a few obvious reasons. I've been hesitant to get the Supra because of how similar the...

There was some mention on GhostNote about this.. it seems they are revamping it and changing things...

I certainly hope they aren't going out of business or anything...

Re: Snare Drum Audio Blind Test

Did mine.

None of of them were that spectacular in my opinion... and most of the clips in each series were indistinguishable...... maybe that's just me, but yea.

Re: Report from the dark side ;)

We all know "good" is as relative a term they come, and I know you are defining "good" here as taken care of and tuned - not trash.. While I agree with you Andy that a big PA system is not going to...

Re: THE CLASSIFIEDS - For Sale / Wanted

Early 70's K Zildjian Ride. Great condition. Normal patina, weight is written on the underside of the bell... otherwise, nothing anomalous to report.

One the great early Canadian K's - sizing up...

Re: Snare on 1 and 3?

Yes I see your point haha

From the way he is describing it (fast/rodeo/yee haw/dance tune), it sounds as if maybe in he needs to plays a fast country beat, like the train beat on On the Road Again...

Re: Snare on 1 and 3?

Snare on 1&3 is rare, and that's generous. From many points of view, its something you simply don't do. As a...

Re: Drum Dial tuning

Drum Dials are really useful for putting on fresh heads.. The first couple turns can be funky and it helps to check the tension every half turn so you know that the head is going on straight.

I...

Re: Funky Buddy

I don't think its any secret that funk/soul jazz is out of Buddy's element. His solo here is certainly an example of that.

But his groove rocked- I disagree with pretty much everything you said...

Re: Keller offers new line of shells

The 5 ply Magnum shells are pretty much the same thickness as Keller's standard 8 ply shell.

I would like to replace all the shells on my kits with these 5 ply shells. I'm excited.
