Re: 13" Mercury snare restoration...worth it?

Alright, here's what went down!
(to the tune of A Whole New World from Aladdin)
A whole new butt! A brand new thing to hold the snares!...

Re: 13" Mercury snare restoration...worth it?

Thanks guys, so I measured the throw hole spacing and turns out the new throw will fit without drilling, which is nice. I ordered most of the parts I need, should be here in a few days, then pics...

13" Mercury snare restoration...worth it?

So I was at an antique store lately when I saw something that caught my eye... A 60's Mercury 13" snare drum with a very cool red tiger finish! It was 10 bucks, so I figured I'd take it home. Turns...

Re: How do you manage to transport hardware without having it all in one super heavy bag?

This may be sort of an uncouth solution, but I roll up all my hardware in my drum rug and carry it like a burrito. Then again, I only have four stands, so this isn't for everyone...

Re: How do people get your attention when practicing on your home kit?

Coming over and screaming in my face or dancing usually. It's...awesome. I threw a stick at my sister because she startled me once. She dances farther away now.

Re: Anybody have that 'magic touch'?

I totally get that! I'm sort of a spaz player. Not super hard necessarily but I play decently hard on thin cymbals with 5A sticks and haven't broken either. Maybe we're just hitting them right, haha.

Re: Have you ever gigged or practiced without a bass player?

My band practices without our bassist semi-often, mostly because it's our guitarist and me that write the songs usually, but especially in our band, where we only have 1 guitarist (so basically one...

Re: The Killers ( Ronnie Vannucci)

I think they've been playing Mr. Brightside with the lights on a lot lately, they did that when I saw them in november...
Ronnie's a killer drummer, he's got a lot of finesse for those big drums he...

Re: Bass Drum Protection Debate!

After denting an old head with a plastic beater (was gonna replace the head anyway), I use them fancy patches on my heads all the time now. Adds attack, too. Simple and effective.

Gig prep, nervousness, etc.

So, my band,The Flying Surgeons, has its first big-ish gig next weekend at a lounge at a local university. This is significant because, until now, we've just been playing for people we know at school...

Re: For those in cover bands, how much do you stray from the original drum parts?

Either due to short attention span or lack of ability to play as well as the original, I try to keep it recognizable but in my style of drumming. Pretty much our whole band's philosophy, when we do...

Re: 2 up 1 down vs 1 up 2 down

As cool as 2-down is (many of my favorite drummers, like Ronnie Vanucci, play 2-down nowadays), I could never quite get the hang of turning so far to reach the 2nd floor tom. And I actually sort of...

Re: Are Drummers (Generally) Crazy?

I've been known to lick power cables at band practice before...
Also, whenever we go out for our obligatory band mexican food run, I always get the hottest sauce, just to keep it on the edge.

Onstage Banter...

Hey everyone.
Usually I'm just one to lurk around, but I was wondering how much you guys participate, if at all, in stage banter in-between songs in your sets? I know lots of bands like to chat...

Re: Pearl or mapex hardware?

I have stands from both, and my mapex hardware holds up great. No complaints there. My pearl boom stand is good too, but for the price, I think mapex gives you a better bang for your buck.

Your drumming "thing"?

I was at a concert the other week and it struck me how even though we, as drummers, sometimes play relatively repetitive parts compared to the rest of the band (although the bass player's got it...

Re: This thread is for all the lurkers

I lurk because I feel like I don't really have much to add to the conversation compared to all the great drummers here...I do learn a lot though. Maybe I'll start dropping a post now and then.
