Re: Describe the SONOR Sound Please...

Thatís an interesting point. I guess the way to take the player out of the equation is to drop a tennis ball on the drumhead, right?

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

Thereís a way to figure it out. Record him playing, like on your smartphone, then use some desktop software to slow it way down and see how it differs from a drum machine playing the same beat.

Re: Describe the SONOR Sound Please...

To an expert ear. It takes experience and some natural ability to hear subtleties like that.

Re: Sacrificing concepts during practice.

Mm-hmm. I always start my practice session with slow linear stuff between hands and feet. I feel like being able to play really fast linear stuff, while not especially useful on most gigs, is...

Re: Shell material effect on sound

Cardboardís pretty stiff in the longitudinal direction. But in every other direction, definitely. I donít even get the point of this experiment. A promo for the cardboard company? Is the CEO a...

Re: Shell material effect on sound

That was my thought tooóthe strength and weight are probably as much due to the resin as the cardboard.

Re: Problem with George Way Snare

Hmm. So very thin shells have an inherent problem on snare drums? Sounds like Super-Sensitive strainers like on the old Ludwigs could get around that problem.

Re: Shell material effect on sound

Iím only listening on an iPhone, but they sounded kind of dead and dry to me. No mid-range that I can really hear.

Re: Shell material effect on sound

Even within one species thereís a lot of variation in density, due to location of the tree.

Re: State your unpopular drumming opinions

I actually think a metronome app that had a ďbad timeĒ setting would be awesome. Smoothly handling the situation of other players rushing/dragging is something that requires practice. Or you could...

Re: I want a 13" aluminum snare

Brass would be easier to find, and definitely more resonant than aluminum. Remember a 13 is going to be a touch drier just because itís smaller.

Re: How should I drill a hole in my snare to give it a formal muffler?

None of my drums have mufflers. I own about 10 snares, and have no need. A ringy snare sounds just fine in the mix. People overmuffle.

Re: Default Flams/triplets/quads - left hand first?

Vic was principal timpanist, not percussion. But your point is solid. Every rudiment is meant to be mastered with both stickings. Especially simple ones like flams.

Re: Music: Nature or Nurture?

Musical ability is about 80% inherited, according to what Iíve read. Everyone plays an instrument and/or sings and writes songs on my momís side of the family. Her uncle won the fiddle championships...

Re: Click tracks?

Most orchestral percussionists these days are really good. As long as they can hear you at least a little bit, and the click too, I think it will go smoothly.

Re: Yamaha Power Tour Customs - Pricing??

Thatís the issue. If heís willing to wait 6 months or a year with it listed on eBay, he will get a much better price.

What about a live video feed of your playing thatís on a screen in front of them, plus IEMs for them? I had a setup like that for some offstage timpani parts in a Mahler symphony back in college,...

Re: How should I drill a hole in my snare to give it a formal muffler?

Why is a muffler necessary? Isnít moongel sufficient, or gaff tape?

Re: Yamaha Power Tour Customs - Pricing??

Iím guessing $1200 to maybe $1500 on eBay or Reverb, maybe $800 or less on Craigslist. Even that might be a touch high.
