Re: Drumming without click/metronome

As long as you take into account all of the other suggestions made for playing with a click without becoming dependant on it, you should be fine. I would highly recommend practicing with a click. ...

Re: Unconscious switch

idk, I wouldn't worry about it too much unless its tearing your fingers up or causing you to play badly. I've know some really good drummers with some really really weird grips that seemed to work...

Re: Not sure if this is a technique or gear question. Bass drum "buzz"...

I don't know what kind of music you're playing, but it sounds like you just need to either play heel down and let the beater rebound from the head after the stroke, or just to hell with it and go...

Re: Is the Album Dead ?

I do 90% of my music listening while driving. If I'm just hopping in my car to go somewhere in town, I'll pick out a specific song I want to hear. If I'm in for a long haul though, which is almost...

Re: Custom ear mold for Shure

I don't know about Boston, but I got mine at a place here in Chicago called Sensaphonics. As far as I know its the only place that does everything in-house. I just made an appointment to get the...

Re: Do you have a PA?

I've never been in or heard of a band that expected the drummer to have a PA. That's usually the responsibility of the vocalist or keyboardists, since they're the ones that need it to practice. ...

Re: Irish?

I live near Chicago in the US, but I'm about 95% Irish (the other 5% is Scottish). I'm giving serious consideration to immigrating to Ireland for a while in the next year or two though, provided my...

Re: What snare was used on the album Blood Sugar Sex Magic

Classic or tube lugs probably wouldn't make a noticeable difference. What you do have to keep in mind is that (a) you can get close, but not identical to that sound without also knowing every detail...

Re: drum technique- from the heart

Technique is very important. Without it, we can't translate any of those feelings onto the drumhead.

That said, I auditioned for the band I'm in right now long after they started playing...

Re: Bass drum EQ......what a b****!

Put it just a few inches inside the port, aimed at the beaters. Slightly boost around 100hZ, cut everything using a narrow bandwith (should probably be a knob labeled bandwidth or "Q" around...

Hey, I know how you feel. Within the last six months I went from playing with longtime friends in my own house, working on an album with material I knew through and through and was comfortable with,...

Re: Live Sound

While most of my sound experience is in the studio (in which case I'm not a huge fan of gates when used for their traditional purpose at all), I don't think its absolutely necessary. Unless you have...

Good Venues Thread

I've noticed a few posts recently about pay-to-play stuff and other things of that nature. I personally think that if you extend your borders a bit and become willing to travel a little further,...

Re: Bad trend through recession

The Midwest (Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska) has been pretty good to us this winter. We generally just don't play pay-to-play gigs. If you're willing to expand your...

Re: Mixing drums :)

I would cut the way-high stuff. Cut out anything above 10k, because there's really nothing useful up there for your kick drum sound anyway. That'll help to minimize any bleed-through of cymbals,...

Re: Mixing drums :)

That particular EQ control will boost or cut 15dB with its center frequency at 80HZ, which is very very low.

I do a good amount of mixing and recording, and my personal kick drum recipe is a 3-5db...

Re: So what do they really know?

God I hate that. The bass player I complained about before used to insist that every song was way too fast. When I would ask him to show me how slow he would prefer it to be, he would literally cut...

Re: Apartment Sound-proofing: Any Ideas?

Don't waste your money on auralex (the eggshell stuff). Its very expensive, and does nothing to "soundproof" your room. It does an ok job of trapping reflections of sound and that sort of thing,...

Re: Tip for getting more tom resonance

You're joking right?

I'll just stick with my tube lugs and suspension mounts personally. The ones that Ddrum uses are actually pretty compact and unobtrusive. I just hate it when I change the...
