I think a good, deep stretch before you start playing will help a lot, along with some jumping jacks or push ups, something to raise your heart rate a tad.

If you really want to try to make this work, i think you're going to have to tear your set down and start fresh. Set your set up as if you really have two kicks. Don't adjust to how your kit is set...
