Re: Alan White

I saw Alan White last night with Yes. Is he OK? I've noticed over the years that he's lost a lot of energy. He was barely hitting the drums last night. I hope his health is OK.

Re: Video Demo of Spaun Jazz Kit

Beautiful drums. The tom and snare sound nice, but the floor is really badly tuned and sounds terrible.

Re: A love/disdain for Steely Dan?

I love Steely Dan. However, it's easy to find fault with them. The lyrics are impenetrable; the recordings are heavily produced (as others have pointed out); Donald Fagan's voice is pretty bad.

Re: Ghost Drummer for Kiss, Jimi, Alice Cooper etc

I blame the producers and record companies. They value safety and want to work with known quantities - i.e. drummers who have been on hit records.

Re: Ghost Drummer for Kiss, Jimi, Alice Cooper etc

Right on, man. Listen to pop music today. All the vocals are pitch corrected. The time is computer perfect. And what do you get: it lacks all character and interest.

Re: DW Jazz Kit

To say that my new set is beautiful is to insult the set. I want to marry this set. I want to have a sex change so that I can have this set's children. That's how fruiting gorgeous it is.

Oh yeah,...

Re: YOUR Favourite Tony Williams albums

Tony Williams invented Jazz/Rock and discovered Alan Holdsworth. Not a bad day's work.

Re: DW Jazz Kit

The guy at Bentley's Drum Shop (the dealer) said this about the rims: "I check and the hoops are the New "True" hoops. They are a thicker flange hoop that curls around. DW will be offering these in...

Re: DW Jazz Kit

Actually, now that I think of it, triple-flanged might be better for the toms. My understanding is that die-cast can deaden the sound.

Re: DW Jazz Kit

Tobacco fade over Mappa Burl. Yeah! Why no die cast hoops! I need to look into that. It takes them about 2 months to make. However, the first set came in the wrong finish (no tobacco fade). So, I've...

Re: Keith Jarrett, Please Be Quiet!

+10

Keith Jarrett is an affected, self-absorbed jerk.

Re: Jazz Trading Fours

Do you listen to a lot of Jazz? If not, you'll never get it. You must learn the vocabulary. Buy a bunch of Art Blakey albums, Philly Joe Jones, etc. You'll get there :)

Re: DW Jazz Kit

I ended up ordering a DW Jazz set. It should be here in a few months. I already have a 70s era Gretsch set. So, I'll be able to A/B them.

Re: Volunteers needed to test timing trainer software

I just played with it for a few minutes. Very interesting! Unfortunately, I don't have my drums at the moment but I'll try it when I get to my set.

Re: Rare Zildjian Cymbal

I don't think an A Ping from the 70s is very rare. But, check eBay.

Re: DW Jazz Kit

I'm very close to pulling trigger on DW Jazz. A few questions:

* I'd love to get one of those cool exotic woods. I assume those are wraps? I'm afraid a wrap would affect the sound. Thoughts?

*...

Re: DW Jazz Kit

I'm having trouble finding DW Jazz drums anywhere. Who carries them? For those who've bought, I assume you played them first. Are your local dealers carrying test sets?

Re: Freddie Gruber video?

I studied with Freddie when I was a teenager. I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has. I can say that, with me, Freddie focused on technique: how to hold sticks and strike the drum.
