Re: Yolanda Charles on drummers! :)

I play with bad bass players all the time. I've also had the pleasure a few times to play with some great ones. It's easier once you get over the intimidation factor. They know what time it is. ...

Re: The Speed Obsession

I think it is a degree of difficulty thing. People are impressed by what they can not do themselves. Whether it's jumping between buildings like the Parkour folks or doing some blazing fast run on...

Re: played (maybe joined) in blues band

The ZZ Top bass drum shuffle is a sure was to be branded as a rock drummer in a blues situation. Use it and things like the Roseanna shuffle very sparingly.

Best thing I learned was to really...

Re: Songs that make you do a double-take when you sit to down to play them

The intro to Car Wash. Simple right? Basic disco four on the floor with this clapping thing to start. Except that the first clap is on the 2, not the 1. Used to play this song with a drummer who...

Re: What drummers need for a gig

I think snare heads go with people who hit down into them as opposed to rimshot or near rimshot parallel hits. Often folks who sit up high with the snare down between their legs in a position where...

Re: Irony?

Fender makes "signature" guitars in multiple models. You can buy the offshore version which cosmetically looks like the artist's instrument in color scheme, you can buy the California production...

Re: What drummers need for a gig

Plus another one on the comments about the audience not waiting for a fix. I always have a spare snare drum sitting behind me. Parts are in the hardware bag so I can fix it during the break. But I...

Re: Does anyone actually like big finales?

Nothing is more impressive to me than a clean tight ending. Washouts sound like folks couldn't come up with anything better. I play with a guitarist who drives me nuts with them. We'll nail an...

Re: Singers dragging the tempo

Probably folks are excited and counting off too fast. Happens all the time. Then they can't get though all the words. I tell singers to sing the hardest part in their head and then count the...

Re: NorCal Percussionsts Thread

In the Bay Area. Playing in Santa Cruz Saturday, range up to the mid peninsula or so. Occasionally into The City or East Bay.

Re: Help with my technique and mental pulse

Krupa, that link is awesome.

Here's some from jazz pianist Hal Galper;

Here he talks about the time that is within the instrument. Unless you have a '70s kit with stuff taped to everything,...

Re: Hi hats and air lock, no luck.

Tilting the bottom cymbal helps with the air lock on the way down. That is, the build up of air pressure prevents the cymbals from slamming together. I had posted a question about the Edwin Starr...

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

Note that the little hi-hat felts will change the way the cymbal sounds. May be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want. I use large felts on the ride but normal ones on the crashes.

Re: Biggest problem with a sub, or new band member?

Since I also play guitar, I think of "parts" as the little melodic bits or hooks in a tune. To be a good sub, you should know the horn parts, the keyboard parts and the guitar parts. You never know...

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

Wing nuts go on during transit to keep the felts on, but not necessary on the gig. Just more time in set up/tear down. Maybe I should come up with a way to retain the felts without needing a wing...

Re: Strange woman found lurking in the workshop ;)

There may be a piccolo snare in there somewhere. But it's probably not worth the effort.

Re: Benny Greb's DVD about Groove

This is the new wave. "Crowdsourcing". People throw up an idea they have, ask folks to chip in, and the "investors" get a piece of the pie, or at least a product.

It's part of the Steve Jobs...

Re: What do you think of GetSticks.de?

For people who go though sticks constantly, I can sort of see some merit in not having a place orders every month or so.

But basically on line sales comes up with two models.

Lowest price - the...

Re: Best Hearing Protection?

Confused, if you have in ear monitors, you should have attenuation of ambient sound levels. You could always put muffs over them.

More likely that you have "on" ear monitors, better known as...

Re: Playing "War" what is it good for.

I think KamaK might have the answer. So many songs have tambourine in them but some like War are all about it.

Red, I have a Rhythm Tech Hat Trick. It works good on the foot pedal and you can...

Re: Need forum wisdom (fusion "standards")

How about cumbia/hip-hop/jam band? http://youtu.be/jmWnvHo2Mgw I guess you can fuse anything together if you want. The drummer in here has a timbale instead of a shell tom. Like a lot of jam band...

Re: Playing "War" what is it good for.

I have one of those Larry. If I mount it really loose so it can shake it makes some level of sound but not enough for even a bar gig.

Maybe it's because I typically use pretty small and light...

Re: playing along with stuff

Something about this sounds like over the top specsmanship. Multiple drivers per bandpass is only necessary if you can't get enough SPL out of one. e.g. large concert systems. Plus there is...

Re: Playing "War" what is it good for.

I've tried a couple mountable tambourine things and none of them make enough volume for even a moderate gig. I learned the trick of draping a light one over the hat from some other folks. It...
