Re: How to make hi-hats swing sideways?

Easy!

Loosen your top hat clutch so that the cymbal can move the most that it can along the post in the clutch. Set the cymbals just far enough apart that they don't touch at all in the rest...

Re: What Metaphors Do You Use in Your Playing?

Percolating - I like to call that groove I lay down on one of the faster country songs we sometimes play that I'm "percolating". Bubbling along with that Lay Down Sally kind of groove.

Boom...

Re: The power of smiling

I totally agree.

Often people tell me that it looks like I'm the only one "having any fun up there".

Everyone else in my band is so stone faced when we play. I just sit back there and smile.

Re: Hi-Hats: Tight or loose????

I like the top a little loose but not sloppy.

I keep the bottom tilted up so that at rest the edges closest to me are just just touching.

This is my "left foot off the pedal" go-to rock slosh...

Re: Advice please?

Yes yes yes. It is the reason I make sure I play with someone, somewhere every Friday night.

5String's advice is the most important lesson from all of this.

Re: Advice please?

Great questions!

Try to know what you will be expected to play. Practice those songs before you go. Don't misrepresent but also don't be self-deprecating. Just be honest.

Definitely...

Re: Using tuning to muffle 18" bass?

Leave the foam rings off and you might like the open tone more than with either of the two sizes of foam rings for the EMAD.

That's what I do. :-)

Re: Fantastic Peter Erskine video

I think he wasn't even a teenager when he played with Stan Kenton at summer camp and then 18 when he joined his band.

Wonderful guy. Great drummer.

"Learn to listen" and then have a...

Re: Using tuning to muffle 18" bass?

Experiment with detuning one lug on the batter side much the same way some have detuned one snare lug to get that dead thonk that some like.

Otherwise, why rule out a little muffling to control...

Re: Pork Pie Snares?

It's possible but not likely.

I responded a little hastily and didn't look closely enough.

I have been a commercial photographer my whole adult life so I apologize in advance for a lame...

Re: Has anyone read the book "The Wrecking Crew"?

I read the book and enjoyed it.

Unbelievable amount of music created by those guys. Hal Blaine had more work than he could shake a stick at and helped a lot of guys get their start.

Knowing...

Re: I thought this was strange....

I concur that is probably a head-seating issue.

This is sort of the case with me when I play a different kit or get new heads. I get used to a drum sound that I think is good and ANY change to...

Re: Pork Pie Snares?

No worries Bob. Now that I've re-read this whole thread, I think you're correct.

I am somewhat notorious for having lower standards ;-)

Re: Pork Pie Snares?

Aw, thanks CD.

It's all good, we're all friends here. I'm not offended.

Watch now, how I can be a smart ass,

technically splay is not tension rod pulled in.

Andy, if I'm out of line for quoting you here, please let me know.

My previous post might be in err, and maybe at some point Bill D. might weigh in here.

Either way, with most swivel nuts a...

Re: Pork Pie Snares?

That's not lug splay. You are just getting misled by the two grain patterns and the reflections on the lugs in the photo.

Pork Pie/Detamore makes good drums. I doubt that he would let a poorly...

Re: Rock albums with modern production and a great vintage drum sound

From your list relating to that same time period you have to include Nirvana's Nevermind.

Dave Grohl has a Tama Bell Brass in there with a big fat Zil A 22 Medium Ride and a 15" rack and 18"...

Re: When playing one up and one down...

I do like my ride in the 1-2 o'clock position and 1U1D definitely makes it easy.

For me I think that the music that we play just doesn't require more drums. When I was primarily playing my 2U2D...

Re: OCDP ACRYLIC SNARE... ????

Have you played one? I find them to be a bit harsh but they do sound unique and can produce some serious volume.

I would see if your local mega music store has one you can play. Don't know what...

Re: Jim Keltner with Bob Weir

Why yes it is. The sunglasses, Ahead sticks and Paistes tightened down with almost no wobble is a dead giveaway. I've always liked Keltner. He always does something a little unusual and or...

Re: Recording with K Cons

I don't have the 22 MTL but I have a KCHighDef and it has similar qualities.

My guess is that it is the dryness that is appealing but the thinness gets washy when you spank it.

Try playing just...

Re: Cutting down services?

Just take it down to Bill Detamore's shop at Pork Pie and have his guys cut it down for you.
