Re: Friends,Please Guide me

It depends on what your goals are. If taking the exam is something you want to do, then absolutely go for it. But if you are asking what we think of exams, then I would say no, do not take it.

Re: Video Camera Advice

I use a Canon DSLR for the video.

For the audio I use a Zoom H2. If it needs mixed a bit I take it to Garageband first.

Either way, when the audio is done I drop it, and the video, into...

Re: Snare (and head) choice for outdoor gig?

I never bother tuning specifically for outdoor gigs. Playing outside is always rough, especially if you're not miked up. I'm sure they are things you can do to help some, but in general I don't...

Re: Drinking and Drumming

I'm certainly guiltily of the occasional drink or two, especially when I'm not driving and I'm playing with friends. But lately I've been trying to do this less, if at all. Because, at the end of...

Re: seven stroke roll notation

When you see a 7 stroke roll notated on an 8th note as in the example you showed, it should be treated like a triplet, not "e, &, a". Stylistically, the triplet, and its subsequent release are...

Re: Other than practice- quickest way to improve?

If you're not going to practice, then listen….A LOT. Buy CDs, go to live shows, etc., etc. and immerse yourself in it. You're still not going to get very far without putting in the practice though.

Re: Why bother with books?

I have to disagree. Paper is never going to go the way of the 8-track. Like I just said below, why cut out all those resources? It's great that you gather your own material and create a package,...

Re: Why bother with books?

You're right, you don't NEED anything other than CDs and maybe a couple of books, by why wouldn't you use them? They are another resource, just like CDs or a teacher. I almost never advocate...

Re: Jazz bossa?

I would have to disagree with you that there isn't a lot of bossa tunes. You just don't know where to look yet! There's a songbook easily as big as the Great American Songbook. I'm sure you've...

Re: Peppe Merolla

Good call, Tony! Peppe is a monster. He reminds me of a killer drummer in Pittsburgh named Dave Throckmorton.

Re: Is this "Unprofessional"

Well, you should always carry your brushes with you, but that's not what you asked.

Never give anyone the impression that you're not prepared or can't handle the gig. People are always going to...

Dude, I feel your pain. I know it's a horrible feeling, but I really think you should keep at it. The path to success is paved with a lot of failures. Hang in there. Let it be inspiration to...

Re: Improvising over bossa nova exemplas?

I concur. We Americans think of bossa nova as a type of jazz (which it is), but remember, in Brazil it was/is pop music. A lot of bossa from Brazil which doesn't include American musicians like...

Re: Hand technique concepts - Jojo Mayer vs. Bill Bachman?

I haven't really checked out any of Bill's stuff, but the Jojo DVD is killer. I don't like to trash talk or tell people they are wrong, but if you're not getting anything out of that DVD, or you...
