Very insightful answers. I sometimes get tempo anxiety when I am playing. I worry about whether I am keeping good time or not. I guess I just need more hours with a click in my ear.

I found that Dave Weckl video on youtube. That's exactly what my hand is starting to do, but everything feels so wrong. Either I am playing now with my right hand it does not feel comfortable at all....

I think freehand is all about following the stick and its natural bounce. So your wrist would make every stroke, it just uses the bounce to get back up. Open/close is one hit on the wrist's way down...
