Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

Man,, I don't even know how that song would sound with just straight time. Boring, lifeless, even the speed ups and slow downs make that song what it is. Now a days they would quantize/grid it and...

Re: Bass drum technique

I use ALL of my pedal.

When I want to play solid, say doing triplets on the double pedal in a heavy part and it has to be TIGHT, I'll "choke up" and play the top of the pedal by the drum.

Re: Pain in wrist...is there anything wrong with my technique?

I have had wrist pain about 3 times in my years of playing.. Every once in a while I'll go on a kick where I am OVER motivated before recording and want to be tight in the studio. Every time this...

Re: How to start?

I fully agree with not getting a double pedal to start, learn to keep time on your left foot if you get your independence down. once you can do that on the downbeats and upbeats for everything you...

Re: How to start?

I second getting a kit.. Even a cheapo used kit off craigslist will do in the beginning. If you keep at it for a year or two use a newer upgrade as a reward.

practice 30-60 minutes a day. Think of...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

One reason why I love that both of my bands have day jobs and do this for fun. We make enough to fund the band, get CD's pressed, record, merch etc. But there isn't pressure having people need to...

Re: Pain in wrist...is there anything wrong with my technique?

I have dealt with wrist issues from the past on multiple occasions. I have a TFCC injury from a punching bag years back and can only say this.

Listen to physio. Take the month off.

Once in...

Re: Learning heel up

I can't get the same power playing heel down for things like metal where I need to play very loud. When playing jazz I play heel down for control, and to keep that beater bouncing back nice and fast....

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

So true.. And f you argue it, there is most likely another drummer willing to step up and take your spot in most situations.

Re: Micing and Recording Tricks?

the lower the gain the better. use the DAW for volume or the built in focusrite software.

I had a saffire pro 40 for a long time which recorded great. The issue was volume and fullness in play...

Re: Drum Video Settings

I use a 70D with a 10-22 as well. Gets the whole kit in the frame.

If you want it all in focus F8-F11 is correct. But here is the issue, if you don't have a good lighting situation you either...

Re: Hoops/Lugs pitting... what can I do about it?

You can't fix it, but if they are filthy some brasso will work, or the ol tinfoil trick to make em look a bit better.

The only option would be powder coating, but be careful with high heat as it...

Re: Tune Bot - Worthwhile or Not?

You are aware there are like 5 levels of resonance, and you can go up or down in pitch for every drum with the tuning calculator online? hahaha

If you click max resonance and a high pitch I could...

Re: My live playing sucks

There are so many variables to every live gig.
Gear sharing, monitor mix, positioning of the drums, adrenaline, nerves, other musicians, what you ate or how your are feeling, etc.

I always shoot...

Re: Tune Bot - Worthwhile or Not?

100% worthwhile.

Anyone who says it's not, well good for you and go use your ears. But to anyone asking, you probibly need it.

It's done wonders for training my ears, and also getting things...

Re: Heel up - arrrgh!

Your foot never leaves the pedal. That was me suggesting an exercise to try and see if for starters you can do it, and to work on your core muscles.

At slower speeds it comes from the hip flexors,...

Re: How to get most of my practice time!

I always go into practice with a plan. "What am I working on today." If I don't I can blow an hour screwing around very quick.

Start off by using a metronome and a timer.... I'll either break it...

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

Very true, but if they were all putting in 100% of their effort to sound exactly like Elvin, could you tell them apart in a blindfolded test leading back to OP's question?

I guess if you had...

Re: Thinking about double bass...

I see solos all the time. It depends on where you are I guess. If you play or hang out in the pop scene it won't happen. I have a jazz club close by I frequent and see solos all the time.. But in...

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

How would playing hard and fast be any different? Every single thing in your list is still applies.

As far using triggers, I would assume if you triggered Benny and Gadd you would have the same...

Re: Bass drum mic picking up Toms

If you have a loud monitor next to you, and overheads picking up your kit that is going to be a muddy mess. ask for kick, get more kick, kick goes into overheads, back out speaker etc.

I am sure...

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

You can have 20 people play the same beat on the same kit and it will sound different 20 times.

Can I personally tell who is who? Not unless I was studying the drummers in question. But in your...

Hey Alex, that wasn't really directed at you. I just noticed the thread was kinda getting off the topic including my previous post.

I realized he was asking specifically about "top level guys...

Re: My gears and ways to get better sounds

The room looks awesome.

It comes down to tuning, placement, and mixing.

Sounds like your mics are really hot capturing a ton of bleed. I'd turn the gain way down on those...

You may want...
