Re: I subbed this weekend...

Haha thanks guys! Even my wife was expecting some sort of disasterous outcome. Grin.

I was just wondering how it works in these church/worship bands. Are there sermons, speeches and scripture...

I subbed this weekend...

...and played out in public...something I pretty much said I wasn't going to do for a while. This happens all the time, I end up eating my words.

Let me explain (short version). Saturday...

Re: Turned down a sub gig

Thank you for your kind words everyone. I don't get to see her often enough and I got to visit with her for a few last night. Driving home I thought how could have I done anything else BUT turn...

Turned down a sub gig

For a very good reason. Last Saturday morning I got a FB IM from a good friend who I have jammed with several times and thoroughly enjoyed myself. He is in a blues funk band and needed a sub that...

Re: Achieving Greatness

I'll never be great at anything and I never really wanted to be an over-achiever anyway, so I'm quite content being a slacker.... I'm really good at being a slacker. With a bit more effort, I can...

Some down time...

...and much needed. Sorry for my rant yesterday twisting off about everything under the shining sun.

After making the decision to stop all public drumming, save for maybe helping out a buddy...

Re: Got that text last night....

I feel for you. Band dynamics are always a challenge even in the best of circumstances. The most recent band I was in called it quits in Feb/Mar for the same reasons. I learned a lot of good...

Taking a break....

It's been posted on here a number of times, about how folks take a break and work thru whatever caused them to put the sticks down in the first place. But I never dreamed I would want to take that...

Re: Difficult band members

I feel your pain.

I've temporarily given up on trying to find decent chaps to play music with and currently I'm band-less and it feels good. Our band fizzled out 2 months ago and they were all...

Re: Band leaders

First band I played in since drumming again in 2007 was a church band. The leader was a great guy; led from the piano. He was a great pianist and good singer and a great leader IMHO. He allowed me...

Re: Stevie Wonder - Superstition

This song came on the radio today for the morning commute believe it or not. One of those songs where you have to turn up the radio and roll down the windows, drum on the steering wheel, sing it. ...

Re: Sloppy fills

ha. yes there are many fills in there, but to my ear/count only one bar for each fill (4 beats )

Precisely! I was using that as an example of not the length of the fill but the number of fills in...

Re: Sloppy fills

While we're on topic, does anybody here do a fill for more than one bar? More than two bars?

Sometimes whenever a guitar player or keys player has a long solo, or the song is transitioning from...

Sloppy fills

Not to sound too critical, but has anyone ever been less than impressed with a local drummer you've seen in your city playing live with his/her band?

I'm referring to the local cats who play in...

Re: No more jam sessions for me. I'm done

I feel you you martinbr. I don't mind playing at jam sessions as long as the other musicians I am playing with also realize it's a "jam" session; i.e. not perfect, mistakes will be made, some...

Re: The worst gig of my life

After reading all this it sorta makes a person want to switch instuments, to like the Accordian or something.

At least the cr*p venues probably won't have a house Accordian....

Re: A question on Real Books

Thank you. I was primarily going to use it as a listening guide and to become familiar with the songs considered standards. While I may never play a lot of the material in the book I at least want...

A question on Real Books

Reading on another post about getting a Real Book, there are Real Books and there are "fake" books. Even theories on which Real Book is THE book to get.

I read recently the "Real Book Edition 5"...
