Yes, I have found covering my kit is a good deterant, from theft or having someone tampering with the hardware & kit itself. Always have a bandmember or trusting friend watching the gear at all...

It really depends on what kind of sound you want to achieve. You could tune the 12,13 toms slightly higher, giving the needed tone separation from the 14.
