Re: Questions on stick control

It took me three years to get through that book. It was more important to my teacher that I played them cleanly than play them fast. I did 6 to 12 per week. One minute each per day.

I'm in my...

Re: What are the mechanics behind a downstroke?

It's supposed to bounce back high. Otherwise you have to pick the stick up for every subsequent stroke. Controlling the rebound is what it's all about.

There are some rudiments where you have to...

Re: stick control for the snare drummer? yes no

It took me three years to work through that book with a teacher. Now I am back on page one again, trying to build more speed.

I've also worked through a book called One Surface Learning. I has...

Re: Breaking bad playing habits

I've been learning new grooves every week for three years. My teacher assigns them. They can be challenging but as you go on you see a lot of overlap in the sticking and count.

Basically to...

Play all your rudiments with left hand lead and tap your foot on the downbeats.

Re: Sixteenths against Eighth Triplets

16th notes has 4 notes per beat in a measure of 4/4.

8th trip has 3 notes per beat.

Re: stuck :'(

+1 on learning to read.

When I want to learn something new, I just turn the page.

Re: cowbell and woodblock rhythms

If you want to abuse the cowbell I recommend "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain.

Re: Worth buying Yamaha Maple Custom?

I got my MCANs (albeit a 4 piece) for $1200. Plus is came with two stands a Paiste 2002 ride and two 80's Zyldjian crashes.

$2300 is pricey.

Re: Bands with two drummers

Zappa and the Mothers had two drummers. Danny Carey plays in a band called Volto and the lead singer plays drums also. I think that Segar song Hollywood Nights was recorded with two drummers.

Re: Quarter note triplets?

This issue has come up on occasion while working thru Stick Control.

It always has to do with hand position. If you slow it way down, you'll figure out on what strokes the hand needs to stay...

Re: Transcription Help

I could be wrong but I'll take a stab at it.

It seems to me it's half time with the snare hit on 3 for the measure.

The bell pattern is 16th notes with all the "e" missing.

1--&uh, 2--&uh,...

Re: Practicing till fatigued

One of the pro's on the board once posted that: with proper technique you should be able to practice anything indefinitely without fatigue.

If you are tense you will get tired. If you are relaxed...

Re: weaker hand holding me back

Bad habits lead to right where you are. You hit a wall and can't progress. You should get a teacher to correct your grip and whatever else so you have the tools to progress.

You really need...

Re: left leg gets tired quickly when doing disco beat

Keep time with your left foot as you drive. Do it at your desk. On the bus. Whereever. Just got to get that leg in the same shape as your right leg that's always working the bass drum.

Re: Buddy Rich's Modern Interpretation of Modern Snare Drum Rudiments

This was my first drum book. I've been playing for 2.5 years and my teacher still assigns lessons out of it. The binding is broke and all the pages are falling out LOL.

Took almost a year to go...

Re: Counting, notes, time signature etc.

Don't forget triplets:

1 And Uh, 2 And Uh, 3 And Uh, 4 And Uh.

Also remove the "And's" and you get a shuffle.

1, Uh 2, Uh 3, Uh 4, Uh

You should get some lessons. You'll learn to read...

Re: 16th note bass drum dillema - Confused and frustrated

Play 16th notes on the hats so that you can easily line up the kick with a hand strike. Once you can play the groove that way, go back to keeping time in 8th notes.
