Re: Should i put a hole in my basedrum head?

The feel and sound will be different with or without a hole in the front head. Try it with the head first, then try it with the head and some dampening in the drum. Then try it with the front head...

Re: Bearing edges on Ludwig metal snares

Ludwig snare drums can be very sensitive. Just use a thin head. Diplomat or Ambassador at the thickest. Possibly even a diplomat snare-side head (tensioned very tightly).

Re: Renown 12x14 Floor Tom and a Tape Measure?

If I were you, I would install those brackets lower, closer to the bottom edge. Otherwise, it'll be tough getting the drum high enough.

Re: NEW KIT - DW Performance Double Bass

Perhaps, but if you play with your right hand on the hi-hats, it will be like you've got a straight-jacket on.

Re: NEW KIT - DW Performance Double Bass

You should be able to get the bass drums much, much closer together (almost touching). The way you've got them now, you're basically doing the splits in order to play the hi-hat pedal.

And...

Re: Recording SNARE DRUMS

Just use whatever snare you have. The song/music is more important than the snare. A good snare can be tensioned any which way for whatever vibe you need.

Re: Yamaha Drums

I think Yamaha did a limited nostalgia run of those drums about ten years ago, in two or three colors, with original specs.

Re: Cast metal snares.

I think you're on the right track then. I had a solid steel Gretsch snare that was just too loud for me, so I sold it. Nice sound, but just too loud.

Re: Just browsing - cool steel snares

I find that cheap steel snares sound better then more expensive ones. Generally, brass drums are going to be less harsh than steel, and steel will usually be louder. Check out the Gretsch 4164 chrome...

Re: tuning issues with new kit, advise needed

Just sell the PDP and pick up a Gretsch USA Custom in Satin finish. They're way more affordable than you might think. You may have to wait a few months (3 or 4) if you can't find the exact...

Re: Ludwig Black Beauty VS Black Magic

There is a difference, and some prefer seamless, others prefer the sound of a welded shell. The Gretsch 4160 is a classic snare with a welded shell. it sounds amazing.

Re: Told to hit harder

When you "hit harder" the drum's response is louder, which in turn, doesn't require the microphone's input level to be quite as high. This means that the mic isn't going to pick up adjacent drums or...

Re: RUSH retirement rumor

This is their last big production tour, but they'll be out playing again. It may be smaller venues (like The Wiltern in LA for example), or it just may be shorter tours, but this isn't the end. I say...
