Re: How do you hear it all?

I just play by radar now. After 30 years of subjective monitor mixes, sometimes the soundguy who seems to be on his menstrual cycle and the "throw and go" sets where you literally throw your gear...

Re: Keeping stands/drums in the same position

I have everything Memori-loc'd and use DW Dogbones. I can eyeball everything for the most part because it's all about setting angles, not heights or tilts.

If you gotta mark something use a paint...

Re: Why bother with books?

Why do karate masters still practice the basics? Because there's always a need to know those things.

Also there's a difference between "book learning" and "street learning". A drummer could play...

Re: Guru snare competition results!

I had a great time doing this. And this is kinda how the art world is- doesn't matter really how "good" you are at all. I mean, you gotta have some level of competence... but it boils down to a...

Re: Stage Etiquette

When we do multiple band shows, I make sure I help the drummer before and after my set with their gear. Usually they catch on to the good sportsmanship and will offer to help me with mine.

If...

Re: Playing in a Bar - Length of Sets/Breaks/Hours

Depends on the gig. Some places are oldschool, the STRICTLY ENFORCED 45/15. Usually you can get a vibe for these places because they have a clock somewhere on or near the stage.

Other places want...

Re: The 23" bass drum

My friend Tony Braunagel has a 23" bass drum from DW. It's pretty cool but heads are a pain to find.

Re: Comparing ones abilities with others

We all speak differently, and our drumming is like a voice. Eddie Bayers once said "Your fingerprint is what makes you unique".

I remember hearing a quote somewhere, someone said of Jimmy Vaughn...

Re: How to naturally play quieter?

Shift your mindset. Take all the muffling off your drums. ALL of it. Tune them to where if you breathe on them they'll respond.

Start thinking less like you're roofing a house but rather sewing a...

Re: Drumless backing tracks?

Those are generally prepackaged and sold. Lots of that kind of stuff with the usual publishing houses; Alfred, Mel Bay, etc.

Re: Rock and roll....over?

It's the product of cutting the arts and music programs in schools so we have a race to the bottom.

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

I never discuss politics on my Facebook wall and rarely discuss them anywhere. Religion as well. I'm not an expert on either and just refrain from any sort of invective.

I wish others could do...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

Too many people get caught up in the political maelstrom and begin ranting on all those things they have no control over whatsoever.

Facebook made me sad in the beginning because I would come...

Re: Getting the most out of the Chaffee books.

Been in these books now for about 20 years. Thing is, you just keep doing the work and it will come out of your playing via osmosis. These books are like a study in language; then you get onto a...

Re: stick keeps sliding in traditional grip

Gripping too tightly I'd wager. When you grip too tight you are usually only holding from a single point; when you relax your hand a bit the skin to wood contact (rawr...sorry!) will increase and...

Re: Creating A Logo

If I were to have a Death Metal band I'd just get a pile of sticks and take a picture of it and then all these kids could come up with what they think it says. Some of those logos are completely...
