New setup

Anyone tried out any unconventional drum set ups lately?

Mine's not too strange, but had a few comments since been using it. Really basic - snare, kick, floor for drums and hats, crash and crash...

Re: my drumset is not loud enough

Maybe you should get them to try earphones too...then they'd at least be aware that it's actually much clearer to listen to loud music whilst wearing them, at least in a live setting.

Re: Providing drums at a gig

From the replies above and from personal experience, it's pretty clear that in this situation the key thing is communication. If you politely speak to whoever it is beforehand and just lay down some...

Re: Will electronic kits ever entirely replace acoustics?

They're handy, but I definitely don't prefer them to acoustic kits and in a recording/gig situation there's a few things dynamic and velocity wise that simply can't be recreated. Obviously they can...

Re: Other uses for drum gear/parts

There were hooks already on the wall, and luckily the inside rim of both heads is the ideal size to just sit nicely on them.

That's awesome! I want one!

Re: Do you write/draw on your batter heads?

I'm lucky enough to have two kits - one for recording/shows and one at our rehearsal space for writing/rehearsing. The latter's heads are filled with scribbles and song structures!

Re: To Let or not to let..another dummer use your kit on a gig.

I'm in the same situation as AtomicFlapjack usually - the standard for bands playing original songs around here is that there are often 4 - 5 bands on the bill. This means that there is very little...

Other uses for drum gear/parts

I was going to post this in the Drum Gear forum, but then realised that I couldn't pinhole it into a specific category.

I had some stock heads that I wasn't using, and had a blank wall so...

Re: Sound guys... *sigh*

I've been lucky enough to be able to work with loads of great sound guys. I go out of the way to thank them after the set if I can. The good guys really don't get enough credit for their work. The...

Being in more than one band

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd open up a discussion about what people think of being in more than one band. I'm in two at the minute, with a possible third coming up. Personally I find it easy to do,...

Re: Soundcheck Beats

Brad, I'm not sure if it's the same where you are, but from around here if someone overdoes it in soundcheck, they're usually pretty new to it. Is that the same for you, or do you find even some of...

Re: Are you Beat-Deaf?

That's pretty interesting. I have a friend who is awful at clapping in time (at gigs) and nodding his head in sync, even. I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying he has a condition though. I think there...

Re: Soundcheck Beats

I don't understand how if a soundguy asks you to play a beat, going on to play a beat is making his life difficult? I'm just doing what he told me to do. As long as the velocity is the same as it...

Soundcheck Beats

Thought this might be an interesting thread

I'm guessing most of us here have done soundchecks at some point, some of us numerous times and on a regular basis.

So you check everything, then...

Re: ...so it looks like I`m a better drummer when I`m drunk

I definitely understand where you're coming from. When I started playing gigs regularly, I used to have a couple of pints before our set to calm down. I had pretty bad nerves. I still have those...

Re: Breaking things?

Breaking 13 sticks is terrible, two cymbals and a drum head is terrible. I don't recall saying it wasn't.

I wasn't talking about the guy who broke 13 sticks in the bit you quoted, I was talking...

Re: Breaking things?

Honestly, I've never really been able to stomach the whole "oh, cymbals are only supposed to break 15-20 years" argument. Surely it completely depends on genre, playing style and most importantly -...

Re: What sets you apart?

I'd like to say I have my own "style" but I'm just emulating my favourite drummers really!

I think the only thing that sets me apart is down to the scene I play in.

I'm a post-hardcore band...

Re: Why do you play drums?

good question..

I loved it ever since I first sat behind a drum kit and threw a simple beat together. Reading some of these replies has made me realise that the main reason I do it is because it...

Re: Are Guitarists in Denial about the Drumset ?

Bit of a poor comparison, but I'll swing with it.

Either way, guitarists also have to learn the same for fingers, as stated above. They have to be able to put their fingers and hands in very...

Re: Are Guitarists in Denial about the Drumset ?

There's much more to music than physicality though.

Re: Are Guitarists in Denial about the Drumset ?

In denial because of what exactly? Because they disagree?

I love playing drums, but I don't think mastering the drums is "better" than mastering any other instrument.

Yep. As well as...

Great Modern Drummers

I find myself hearing lots of people saying "oh, these days there just aren't any good drummers any more, yadda yadda, blah blah, none of these kids come close to Bonham" etc.

I think this is only...

Re: sorry but i have to, BIG DRUM KITS

I get what you mean, but when I was younger I was the same. I watched people like Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy and thought "wow, i want one!" - like most people who play, I was really into the...

Re: What's with Zildjian hate??

I used Zildjian throughout my early school years. Grohl was a key influence to me, I used to play lots of Nirvana. Rage Against The Machine too.

Switched to Sabian eventually, now I'm back to...
