Re: Long, Detailed in depth review of the Taye GoKit

LOL yeah that's probably a good place to start, don't know why that didn't occur to me. Thanks!

FTR, my biggest gripe with the Taye kit is that all the preset 'bundles' seem to be weird sizes. I...

Re: Max Roach solo (need help)

Interesting. He plays something similar starting around 4:56 but the rolls sound slightly different. The first ones sound tight and closed but they don't seem to have enough rebounds to be buzzes....

Re: Long, Detailed in depth review of the Taye GoKit

Hi thanks for the review. Does anybody know where these are available? The usual suspects show it "out of stock" either permanently or temporarily, and I can only find them on eBay.

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

Ummm .... I googled Elvin Jones Ginger Baker and got this:

"On the other hand, exposed to some jackass — i.e., Cream’s Ginger Baker — dishonoring his beloved instrument of choice, Jones shifted...

Re: How to make success on YouTube as a musician

Nah. You're just offering a dissenting opinion. You aren't disproving anything. That's not how opinions work.

Bass players have this exact same argument. It's funny that anyone would argue about...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

I come off way too critical in writing. It's a fun song to play, just when I play covers I feel I should try not to stray too much and doing that roll over and over can be boring. But I'd much rather...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

You're right, but there's an interview where John Lennon claims the name 'The Beatles' came to him on a flaming pie. In both cases you have to wonder how much of what the guy says is really true.

Re: How to make success on YouTube as a musician

I'd hate to end up like that Nobel Prize Winning scientist who is now unemployed for making a harmless private joke about women ...

But isn't that just the lamest? I have nothing against women...

Re: Drum fads: Past, present...and future?

As a Gretsch owner, I really dislike the 'silver sealer'. It smells terrible (smacks you in the face when you reskin your drums) and like a black car every smudge, fingerprint, and light scratch...

Re: Drum fads: Past, present...and future?

Amen. After watching that Dream Theater audition show I was curious to see what kind of stuff Mangini was playing with them. First video was "AWESOME MIKE MANGINI DRUM SOLO!!!!!" The video was about...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

Unless I'm mistaken, his jazz solo stuff was strictly after his rock career, right?

I mean the guy has jazz chops ... now. Don't know if he makes me 'feel' anything, but that's kind of a curse...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

What's interesting about all this is my band plays "White Room". Baker's rolls in that song are so boring. It's the same roll over and over and over. I've been told many times that he was a great...

Re: Art Blakey

Yep. It's a loving view of him, because like so many others one of the first jazz songs I could actually play was Moanin' (which I argue is his most tasteful performance, but there are probably...

Re: Art Blakey

I kind of think of Art as the rock drummer's jazz drummer. Every recording I hear from him he's just pounding and thwacking and kicking and thumping. Don't think I've heard a single ghost note in...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

I'm not a speed freak but I would like to be able to reliably throw in a few single-foot runs in some jazz and rock songs. What you're saying seems to jibe with advice from others like Colin Bailey. ...

Re: Colleges for drum set players

I don't get this. Who has $56-60k a year (and rising)? That is hard to recoup even if you graduate to a 'real job'. I can't imagine how stressful it is to get a music degree, walk out with a couple...

Re: Instructional books....hard copy or eBook??

Bah, I was going to say 15", but then thought 11.5 must fit into 13". I forgot about the diagonal measurement nonsense :-P

I've had one 15" laptop before and never took it anywhere. Portability is...

Re: Instructional books....hard copy or eBook??

I really like the concept of the e-book, but yeah the lack of full-size reading devices makes it hard to switch. To get a normal drum book size display you need at least a 13" laptop, and hauling...

Re: The drummers who just go for it

I realize there are people who will always defend Meg, although it's usually for some reason other than actual talent. But I always felt the Ringo Starr comparison was particularly grating. Ringo...

Re: What Drum Moments Give You the Chills

Everything Joe Morello ever played (there's a reason Buddy Rich, and every other contemporary drummer, looked up to him).

But particularly the flourish he does during Take the A Train. This video...
