I'd do the typical rock drum doll with lots of KLR , and double bass and fast and very loud so they go "holy sh**t, that was too effing loud" and tell themselves "don't ask thst stupid question...

I really like the 1st half of it (until the kick on 3) . So, I am going to use it and switch to a 16th or 32nd on the 3rd and 4th.

95% of the time , it sounds like playing on some cardboard boxes.

Like I posted on post #5, work on what aronoff calls "from your belly".
He says in the video "simple music" ie: backbeat on 2 and 4. try to do it from the belly and try the hinger timpani grip on...

Playing to a shaker and/or a conga ostinato is always going to be way easier. You have a "timing reference" every 1/16th.
Try practicing with the metronome on the upbeat (on the "ands ") I prefer...

Most fingers I have played with rush. And then I do the backing vocals and then I dtop doing the backing vocals because him depending up screws up my drumming !!!

Remember that the quick beats bottom cymbal is nearly flat, thus creating a smaller air pocket then a set of regular hats.

Look into where the holes Re located and how big they are on a set of quick beats and copy that.

12 and 16 work really well in octaves for me. It gets the 12 in a nice mid tuning and the 16 on the lower end of its range , close to the flappy but not quite there yet.

Just get the Richie morales kit. It comes with everything and has a bunch of a and k cymbals. .
