Re: Trained VS self taught?

I took lessons for ten years from the ages of eight to eighteen. I am twenty nine now and I haven't had a formal lesson in all that time. But I never stop listening, watching, and learning from other...

Re: What good is a drummer if he can't keep time?! :-(

Sorry, but this is a really stupid thing to say. Firstly, it isn't true. A good sense of time is something that can be learnt, and developed with experience. Secondly, saying things like that can...

Re: How Much Does Character Matter?

It matters to me under some circumstances. Firstly, if the musician in question is writing, for example, racist or generally unacceptable lyrics. Nazi punks fuck off! Secondly, if the shady character...

Re: A few of my drumming issues

Some good advise here. I am really into playing benefit gigs for causes that I feel something about. It seems to me that it is a way I can use my love and talents to help those who aren't as lucky as...

Reggae

Hey guys. I am looking for a good book on reggae drumming. There doesn't seem to be much out there and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Re: Learning double stroke roll

The best advise I can give you here is get a new teacher, preferably one without such a negative attitude.

Re: Books on drumming improvisation

Benny Greb's 'The Language of Drumming' DVD has some good stuff on improvisation. Also Check out Gary Chaffee's Time Functioning Patterns. Improvisation is a key element in Gary's method. Enjoy.

Yes, continually going back to basics is definitely the way to improve overall :-)

Re: Drum wood sources

Yeah this is my take on it too. It's a shame really. I admire the attempts to bring prices down and make good quality instruments accessible to more people, but there is an environmental cost. I...

Re: Drum wood sources

Yes, this seems like the only way of finding out. In terms of the actual kit, am only concerned with having a decent sounding kit that stands up to the road, so there are plenty of options other than...

Drum wood sources

Hi guys, I have been having some thoughts recently due to my intention to buy a new mid-range kit for touring with my band. One of the kits that I have been thinking about is the Gretsch Catalina...

Re: making faces when playing

I generally look extremely serious when I am playing, which is weird, because I never look serious in everyday life :-)

Re: Which hand technique has the most speed 'potential'?

Isn't T-1000 the Schwarzenegger model. Thought liquid metal was T-2000? haha :-)

Re: Creativity killed with timing??

Yes, do this. Think of the metronome as another musician you are playing with. Jam with it. Really get lost in a groove. If you try a fill and you go out of time, practice that fill with the...

Re: bass drum and hh rudiments to start with

Practice with your heel up and with your heel down. Stay relaxed and just play grooves slowly. When you are grooving on the ride, practice stepping the hats on different beats of the bar, again, with...

Re: Looking for a few good drum books...

Okay, for funk and fusion, get hold of Gary Chaffee's Time Functioning Patterns, and Linear time playing. Both are great for both funk and fusion. For afro-cuban I would recommend Afro-Cuban rhythms...

Re: Drumming punk/emo

Yeah man pick up R.O.I.R. One of the greatest punk albums ever. Someone also said Bad religion. I second that also. Also, listen to Fugazi. Brendon Canty is an amazing drummer.

Re: Most common drummers ailments and health complaints?

I have constant tinnitus from years of gigging and playing without protecting my hearing. I wear earplugs these days to stop it getting worse, but once it is constant it never goes away.

Re: Got Sacked from my Band

Hey man, I am sorry for you. That story sounds very familiar. The very same thing happened to me in January. The bass player didn't know and so we decided to form our own band. There were so many...

Re: Open-Handed Players: When did you start?

I have been practicing open-handed for a while now. I have been playing crossed for twenty years, and in the short time I have been practicing open, I have seen big improvements in my playing. My...
