Re: Gretsch options- gretsche experts- little help?

I own a Catalina Maple and I'm very satisfied. I do a decent amount of recording a playing out and I love it.
Would I prefer a USA Custom? Absolutely, but I feel like it's a lot more money for just...

Re: who here uses in-ear plugs?

I always practice with earplugs. I personally hate the foam ones though. They typically cut out 30 dB and that's too much. I have a couple pairs that cut out around 15 dB and that's what I prefer. ...

Re: Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple Stock heads

They're similar, but they feel thinner. The coating seems to be cheaper too.

Re: Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple Stock heads

I'm currently using Coated Emperors over Clear Ambassadors, but that's pretty much the same as Coated G2's over Clear G1's.
I don't have an updated solo video with the new heads, but this is a...

Looking for Gretsch Dark Cherry Burst Floor Tom

I'm looking to purchase a 16x16" Floor tom in Dark Cherry Burst.
It can be either the Renown series or the Catalina Maple series.
I want to convert it into a kick so I can make a manageable jazz...

Re: Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple Stock heads

By the way, you can definitely find a better price than $999. I bought mine brand new (7 piece in Dark Cherry Burst) for $750 a year and a half ago from Fork's Drum Closet in Nashville. With tax it...

Re: Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple Stock heads

I bought the kit last December, and they were single ply heads by Evans. The batter was coated, the reso was clear.
They work to an extent, but getting after market heads is definitely worth it,...

Re: Help a gear noob step up his game? (advice needed)

The 80's Stage Customs aren't as nice as the newer Stage Customs. The newer ones are 100% Birch while the 80's are typically Birch over Mahogany. I'd definitely recommend Emperors over Ambassadors....

Re: Best way to hook up with a band

Make sure you have legitimate samples of your playing so that way they know that you can play.
Also, go to venues where local bands play and just meet people. You never know the people you'll run...

Re: So,I Got a Brass Sensitone..

I haven't played much high end Pearl stuff, but my dad has a 6.5" brass Sensitone, and it's by far my favorite Pearl drum I've played.

Re: Downsizing - questions about bop size bass drums

I played a Catalina Jazz at a church when I played in the praise band. I liked it quite a bit. The snare can actually sound pretty good if you put the right heads on it.
I have a 22x18, but I wish...

Re: PDP Concept Maple - Drum Heads

Most jazz drummers use coated G1's or Coated Ambassadors. Having a second ply slightly lowers the pitch in addition to other things.

Re: PDP Concept Maple - Drum Heads

I would say so just because of the versatility. The G2 will sound more open, but you can muffle them if they ring too much. The EC2's have built in muffling and if you put them on and think they're...

Re: Help a gear noob step up his game? (advice needed)

You can make decent kits sound good just by putting some time in.
Here's a clip of me playing an 86 stage custom with Emperors on top and Ambassadors on bottom. This was in high school so I wasn't...

Re: Ride Cymbal Technique

I'm a little strange. When I play set my left hand is American grip and my right hand is French grip. I didn't intend to play that way, but that's just how things ended up and I don't think there's...

Re: How do I develop feel and groove, THANKS!

If you're a music major, I would imagine you can read music. You should definitely check out Herlin Riley's book and Stanton Moore's book. They're both really great books.

Re: How long from complete beginner to gigging?

Depends how quickly you're progressing. When I first started I was in 4th grade and I didn't play a gig till 7th grade. That's only if you count church praise band to be a gig. Ha.
Based on the...

Re: Pearl Blx tuning issue

I prefer to use duct tape to lightly muffle things, but I've also heard of people dropping muffling rings into drums to rest on the reso head from the inside and I know that Travis Orbin uses moon...

Re: Snare with natural reverb....

I picked up a 14 x 8 Mapex Black Panther Fat Cat and it sounds huge. I have a double ply head on it which lowers the pitch slightly. I'd definitely recommend it.
Ultimately, you're probably looking...

Re: Metal snare drums

Check out some of Mike Johnston videos on YouTube. In all the videos where he plays a Gretsch kit he plays a 5.5 x 14 Gretsch Aluminum snare.

Re: Gretsch Catalina Club Street

I wonder how it affects things with having single flanged hoops on bass drums as opposed to the standard bass drum hoops.

Re: 2 up 1 down vs 1 up 2 down

I typically bring 1 up 2 down. I do most of my fills on the rack and first floor and the second floor is there mainly for impacts and crescendos. I rarely play fills that are just runs down the...

Re: YouTube's influence, how realistic?

Search "drummer at the wrong gig." This guy's not a bad player, but it went viral because of his ridiculous antics. The last time I saw it it had something like 20,000,000 views.
I have a pretty...
