Re: New to me Acrolite

After I read this post I went and bid on a "Ludwig snare" on eBay with no reserve and starting at 99 cents. It was clearly a Supraphonic (badge indicated a 64) in semi-rough condition (no baseball...

Re: Real Band Dilemma....

Understanding the other person's viewpoint is always the first step in understanding a problem.

Re: Copyright Infringement

I'm all for artists' rights to their own music, but it seems odd to me that federal law could be trumped by state law.

But I'm no lawyer.

Not used to seeing him play like this

I play guitar too, so I was checking out clips of Emily Remler and stumbled across her playing with a certain drummer:

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

In case it is not clear I am making the point that to the uninitiated, waving a baton has as little to do with making music as fiddling with a laptop does.

In other words, they both have...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

Before you watch these clips, read through the post and decide which entry(s) is least likely to require skill and/or musicianship. Then watch the clips.

This is a drummer. You've probably heard...

Come see my baton LIVE!

I mean, really, are conductors even musicians? Why not just tell the...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

Your viewpoint depends on what you value in a musician and his or her music.

If you value the ability to play a traditional instrument live, then Deadmau5 will seem dumb.

If you value the...

Re: Did I just figure something out?

His drumming idols were titans of jazz, so it makes sense that he would improvise his part in some respects.

Re: Spousal Static - A mini Rant

Most of the 'communication' advice given in this thread is explicitly written about in a book titled "Difficult Conversations".

Everyone needs to read this book. Warning: once you (meaning...

Re: How our perspective changes

Fine, I'll take the contrary position.

I disagree. I don't think you need to hit hard and aggressively on unmuted drums to develop technique or power. Yes, of course it helps to play exactly as...

Re: Is it still 4 way coordination if I....

Independence literally means "unaffected by other things" in this context. If a limb can keep playing its pattern no matter what the others are doing, that limb is independent. 4 way independence...

Re: Is it still 4 way coordination if I....

I think of it this way:

If you're doing 4 separate patterns with each limb, that's independence. At the extreme end of independence is when each limb is playing a different meter -- polyrhythm,

Re: Musicians Say streaming Music will Leave them Broke.

The music industry has suffered the same fate as every other industry affected by the Internet: a hollowing out. In other words, fewer people at the top make money, but those that do make more. The...

Re: Anyone ever try to poach your seat?

I seem to recall anecdotes about Swing Era bandleaders firing the whole band and then rehiring everyone but one or two guys. Seems like a passive-aggressive way of firing someone without actually...

Re: What would happen if...

I disagree; the years of grade school and high school spent learning math and science and how to think are all preludes to learning a specific subject in depth. No one can enter a four year...

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

While getting an outside opinion is great, I don't think it will help to say "Well, this guy thinks I'm playing just fine". In fact I think it will just lead to more arguments about whether that guy...

Re: 10.000 hours of practice is not the magic number

I suspect people who improve rapidly don't find practice tedious. Practice, in fact, makes them feel that they have improved, but not ... quite ... enough. It's like eating Doritos. You always...

Re: Drumming Addiction and Withdrawals

Beautiful story, thanks for sharing. After leaving the Navy was there no way to shoehorn playing music back into your life? That's a real bummer.

Re: Do we really need expensive drums?

I agree that the musician makes the instrument sound good.

But I think the better instruments allow good musicians to express themselves more fully. They'll have a better dynamic range, will feel...

DW factory day

Anyone going to DW's factory day (http://www.guitarcenter.com/DW-Factory-Day-g26836t0.gc?rel=email&source=4TP4G1BE) this year? I've never been, always been curious about whether it's worth the drive...

Re: Making Ends Meet Between Tours?

I have nothing useful to add; I'm a hobbyist with a day job myself.

Just thought I'd buck the trend. :)
