Do you plan your fills?

I'm working on some original material at the minute with a band I'm in. I'm just wondering, do you guys spend a lot of time with material not only coming up with grooves but also coming up with...

Re: Jojo Mayer: Secret Weapons Part 2

I just got mine today and watched all 3 dvds in one sitting.. It was either that or do some work ;-)

I thought it was great and went into a large amount of detail regarding various techniques,...

Re: Pain on fingers - technique & control

On this subject, just thought I'd share something in case its relevant to anyone.

I've long struggled with pains especially in my right hand. One thing I've changed fairly recently that seems to...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

The E-Kit which I picked up for a good price second hand, and on my violin is my new mute to protect the ears of the innocent.

Re: Straight from the horse's mouth.

All the best drummers I've seen seem to use everything, including Buddy. I can't imagine anyone getting decent speed and feeling relaxed by not using their fulcrum, and keeping there fingers still...

Re: Stick angles

Pain not good. If you can, forget Skype and go and find a reputable teacher (i.e. one known to churn out good players). Even if it means traveling a long way once a fortnight.

I used to get...

Re: Any UK shops left with lots of cymbals to try?

Great info, thanks! And if I take a trip to Perth I will be sure to check out that eating place.

Any UK shops left with lots of cymbals to try?

Does anyone know of any shops left in the UK with a big range of cymbals that you can actual try on a kit? I have the urge .... and my wallet is looking nervous.

Re: Cover Band Drummists - How accurate are you?

Depends how much I like the original drum part.. If its something like "Stop" by Sam Brown, drummed by Gavin Harrison, then I try my best to copy the parts because they are so subtle and tasty. A...

Re: Poll: do you double bass?

Probably #3. Every time I think about working on it seriously, I get inspired by a single kick player to work on everything else instead (most recently Anika Nilles).

Re: I think I might have been practicing wrong for a long time..

I had this problem, and it went on for longer than 6 years.. It was really down to unfocussed practise, "distracted" practise, and practising the wrong things. I usually ended up just playing along...

Re: Musically, what are you involved with at the present?

I'm currently just in the covers band I've been in for 15 years or so. It's more of a social thing really! We get together once a fortnight and just play - we don't really gig. A couple of years...

Re: Do you use moeller for back beats?

It is a fairly small motion .. though often the right hand is whipping with it on some grooves (it seems fairly natural to use a moeller type motion on the hi-hat; I don't think I've ever seen anyone...

Re: Do you use moeller for back beats?

I just tried it now without any whipping motion; it felt very strange! Sort of lacking in energy. So definitely yes I do use it.

Re: Left hand thumb keeps sliding of the stick

Personally I would learn to play thumb and first finger first, and then second finger when you have that down.. Since doing that with my new teacher, my grip has become much much better.

I spent...

Re: What technique changed your drumming dramatically?

Finding a good teacher, learning doubles, Moeller, fixing my grip. It is all a work in progress undoing the years of badness.

Re: Bass Pedal Technique Help: Heel-Up

Yep I like this one. There is nothing wrong with burying the beater IMO. I do have the Ritter video and I understand it, but to be honest I went back to how I used to play (like in the video...

Re: Re-training My foot? My pedal? Both?

I've also experienced this phenomenon of playing on another kit and the kick feeling much better or worse to the point it affects the groove and my entire comfort. For me I worked out that a...

Re: Practice Pads

Another +1 for the RealFeel HQ 12". They fit nicely on a snare stand too if you have a spare.

Re: Child wants a career in music

Yes, although I would have liked to have played music for a living, I definitely would NOT want to be famous!
