Re: Using a snare as a floortom

Chris Dave does this as well (though that's not saying much since all he has is snares). One of the better setups I saw had what I think was an old Ludwig Parade Snare (14x11), tuned low.

Re: Stoopid drum deal of the day: Sonor Jungle

I had this issue with a converted 16" floor tom I turned into a bass with the PB pedal. Best I could do was get it close enough not to hit the rim and make due. I usually use my Vater Bomber Beater...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

I think it "clicks" when you finally get it enough to feel like it's part of your repertoire. Of course you forget the weeks/months of work leading up to that.

That's how it was when I was very...

Re: Thanks Bo!

I kinda always wondered what happened to other bands when a member goes on tour. Now I know.

Also sad I won't get to see Weird Al's tour. Sold out in like 2 minutes here. When I saw you guys a...

Re: Gear fail - handled beautifully :)

Hah, great vid! This is always my fav lost stick fail video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYo7FXjg1wo

Always amazes me how people can keep so calm and carry on like nothing happened.

Re: 14/16/18 bass drum (depth size)

This is something I've always disagreed with. I think they look ridiculous.

Re: What makes a pro kit?

The Prolite is definitely a pro level kit. That said, you did say "probably".

Re: ?uestlove's new Tonight Show Kit

Nice to see shallow bass drums making a comeback. Hopefully this catches on more.

Re: Sonor Picolo

You might be right. The two drums basically look exactly the same, its just whether it's bronze or brass. I thought brass because on the bronze drums the badge tends to look lighter than the shell...

Re: Sonor Picolo

It's a Sonor Signature Symphony Snare (SY 1404). Brass shell and finish. I believe they came out around 1996, retailed for about $1,200 back then. Your bottom hoop is interesting because it has...

Re: Adults Learning Drums

I disagree that adults think they are poor learners. They've obviously learned other things and spent a lot of time to learn those things. Which is where I think the real issue lies. Time...

Re: Drums as an investment?

I do think a mint HLD 590 as you said would be one drum that would make you money even with inflation calculated in. But it sorta has everything going for it. It's just generally rare, it's the...

Re: What's your story about how you started drumming?

In 5th grade we got to pick what instruments we wanted to play. I wanted to play the sax. The problem was, every kid wanted to play the sax (apparently it was the "cool" instrument), so they told...

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

This thread interests me as I took private lessons in college (and learned a lot), then went on a 15 year break from drumming. I've been back to drumming for the last 3 years or so.

The internet...

Re: Sonor Vintage Series-2015

Here's the video Wally was talking about. I agree that for a German made Sonor, they're not really giving it a very good introduction. It's surprising really, they almost always have studio videos...

Re: Thinking of replacing my sonor signatures

I wouldn't cut them down. There's a lot of people who would buy a vintage Sig set, and there's so many other options out there to fit any musical taste you have. No need to hack a perfectly good...

Re: Sonor help

The bass drum spurs scream Swinger line, but that line did not come in that cream color.

The concert toms are really weird because the only tom mount I recall like that on a Sonor was the...

Re: Mark Guiliana snare?

Not to mention Mark rarely plays his own kit. He's said in interviews "a kit is a kit, you tune them and they make sounds".

The only thing he really keeps consistent is his cymbals.

On the...

Re: Balance point for playing heel up...

This is interesting because my entire problem has been heel down and I'm trying to get better at it but it's your problem in reverse. Heel up uses more of the quad/calf, whereas heel down seems to...

Re: No love for 20" bassdrums?

Lots of love for 20" here, not much love for 20" at most music stores. Also true for shallow bass drum sizes.

It's unfortunate really.

Re: Are you a drum person or a cymbal person

I guess cymbal since I have more hihats than I do toms. But at the same time I hate dedicated crash cymbals because I feel they lack diversity (I'd rather have a crash/ride).

But then again the...

Re: Most important lessons for beginners

Two things I wish I would have learned when I was younger:

Why rudiments are important. Instructors said we had to learn them...why? What's so special about a paradiddle? I thought they were...

Re: Live custom vs. Sonor ascent

From Sonor's FAQ:
http://us.sonor.com/service/faqs/

I've also heard it's from Russia, but the above is what Sonor's site says.

Re: Live custom vs. Sonor ascent

Toms are 9 ply, but the bass is actually 7 ply. They do sound somewhat like the old Phonics to my ears, and the bass drum weighs about half as much as a Phonic just from the thinner shell and...

Re: The false perception of Luan

Yes the "Mohagany" we're talking about is Philippine AKA Luan. And I said something similar about my Exports (early 90's). Small tuning range, but they really sing when you dial in the sweet spot. ...
