Re: New Tama S.L.P 14x7 Birch Bubinga Snare ?

It was introduced last year as one of their new SLP models, along with the Black Steel, I think (this year is the G-Birch and Dynamic Bronze). Look it up, Drum Center of Portsmouth has a video for it.

Re: Shell Tap Tone

Temple blocks, wood blocks, etc. work as a very different mechanism compared to two-headed ply drums with heavy hardware bolted everywhere, though.

Log drums + drumset sticks = broken log drums...

Re: 22" x 12" bass drum - 2015 Origin photo's / spec's

WOW. I haven't said it in a while, but these just exude complete craft and thought. Every little detail is a master's work unto itself. And I bet they sound okay too! ;)

I'm guessing the choice of...

Re: Saturn V vs. Renown

I'd say, in just a general sense, the Saturns will have a more "hyped", modern sound, while the Renowns may have more mids/warmness. They probably will also be a little more focused in terms of...

Re: Crazy hard work has it's compensations - my playground :)

Did I miss a thread about the sapele Tour kit back there? Christ, these look so good.

Re: Buck County Drums

I saw that thread as well and the argument was over the direction of the grain, evidently. I couldn't care less about that – it just seems like a weirdly compromised design anyways. Gluing a solid...

Re: Buck County Drums

Saw some feature from MD about their snare concept which is a thin ply shell wrapped around a solid shell with the bearing edges on the solid shell. What a pointless idea!

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

I'm not going to dignify that with a response.

Glad to see that others are recognizing the bullshit nature of the relationships in this movie as well.

Re: Kickport, does it really make a difference??

Haven't had very good experiences with the Kickport. The installation process is a crapshoot as well. However, it does seem that some people find an improvement. Just something to try.

I echo...

Re: Catalina vs Concept vs Mydentity vs ???

I agree, in this price-range, with these ply shells– the difference is not going to be excessive. I'd recommend using the savings to buy a nice cymbal or two and try out some new heads on your...

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

They should just use rivets and pre-tension the heads so you just have to buy a new drum constantly.

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

Have you seen Crush's hand-hammered copper snares? 13x7" and 14x5.5". Super bulky throw-off, but, y'know.

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

I'm more making fun of their marketing speak - one-headed, hemispheric drums are pretty dissimilar to "normal" drums in terms of response. I'm sure that their experience with copper does nicely for...

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

Yeah, timpani definitely respond similarly to snare drums ;)

Bermuda has me itching to hear this thing, though... this and Tama's new bronze snare.

Re: 14x4?

The distance between the lugs and hoops is delightful!!

I think maybe some S-Hoops would open up that baby a little more :) nice looking shell. I notice going between my 13x5 and 13x6 that the 5...

Re: Yamaha Musashi 13 x 6.5 vs Mapex Black Panther Nomad 13 x 6.5

I'd go for the Nomad as well (which is just 6" deep). Extremely usable classic brass sound IMO. Plus the Mapex "Sonic Saver" hoops are great.

Re: Pedal setup - aka. how do people play this?

As Watso said, you don't actually need your foot in line with a pedal to use it. However, I will say that those kind of setups certainly don't please my aesthetic senses :) My pedal setup looks a lot...

Dirk Verbeuren has used a 14x4" for years–it's certainly not worthless!

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

It sucked. Fletcher is a clear abuser, and the fact that the movie dances around that fact with a "ooh, but what if?" is such a crock. (spoiler) I mean, he literally drove a student to suicide. This...

Re: First pictures - new Tour series zebrano

What a cutie! Do they take low tunings well? Or more of a cracky, high snare?

Re: Jazz Snare Tuning

I agree. I've never been much of a fan of a cranked top & bottom snare sound, so if I were tuning a snare for jazz, I'd probably keep the top head a little lower to get some nice, uh, "chomp" to it.

Re: pdp Concept Wood Hoop kit NAMM 2015

They should cover the whole kit in black pleather and sell it to the ZZ Top guy.

Re: Drum Size Question

Golden ratio in decimal is 1.618. Dividing the diameter by that would get our 'optimal depth'. So for our typical sizes, you'd get:

10" x 6.2"
12" x 7.4"
13" x 8"
14" x 8.7"
16" x 9.9"
22" x...
