drum beat copyright question

Hey! I'm working on my next book, and I had a question: I don't need to clear copyright for drum grooves correct?

I'm planning a series of grooves based on the original groove, designed to...

Re: Thumb problem

Agreed - it is most likely due to holding the sticks too tightly. A good teacher is definitely recommended.

In the meantime, think about it this way. You have to move to play the drums....

Re: Having trouble playing with click

You don't actually need the click very loud at all. You ought to able to turn it way down and still work with it. Besides, turning it up too loud is really dangerous for your hearing.

The problem...

Re: Having trouble playing with click

Metronomes suck.

To make a long story short, (I go into more detail about how and why in my book (www.bitly/11ralyi)) they just don't do a great job at what they are supposed to do.

Now -...

Re: Drum Stool Height Affecting Footwork?

There is a mechanically most advantageous position. It is to sit such that your hip joint is maybe 2 inches about your knee joint. This is where Gavin, Dave Weckl, and many, many others end up...

Re: All 4 fingers on the stick? yes or no?

Volume is not the direct issue. Force = Mass x Accelleration, so getting the palm on top of the stick like he is he is able to lend mass from his arm to the stick for the note (though I suspect he...

Re: All 4 fingers on the stick? yes or no?

I did watch the videos, and referenced them in my posts.

I also said that the pinky themselves wasn't what mattered. (thus you could lose it in a car accident and drum just fine), but that...

Re: All 4 fingers on the stick? yes or no?

As far as that goes - drummers have it easy. It is guitarists who really get fried with wrist position. Both drummers and guitarists have equal rates of repetitive motion injury, but when guitarists...

Re: All 4 fingers on the stick? yes or no?

Indeed, there are many other factors at work than rogue pinkies. Seated/standing balance, shoulder balance, twisting of the spine, seat height, etc all matter.

regarding the videos... Those guys...

Re: All 4 fingers on the stick? yes or no?

In general, the fingers should be wrapped around the stick but NOT gripping it. Gripping the stick with anything more than the fulcrum point is unnecessary.

Whether all of your fingers or not are...

Re: All 4 fingers on the stick? yes or no?

it is possible to play well with pinkys out. In fact, I play press rolls with pinkies out, always have and it is what they told me to do in college anyway. However... sticking your pinkies out...

I talk about this the first day in all of my group classes!

What you are talking about is really a revolution is learning theory, that is accompanying a revolution in neuroscience. The new big...

Re: Any tips for 'useful fidgeting'?

Yeah! I'm working on a 3-4 foot ostinato while playing a paradididdlediddle with the hands. Loads of fun!

Re: Cramping calf muscle?

regarding age - just to be clear cramping is *not* inevitable. It is just that younger bodies recuperate from damage much faster than older ones (this is where diet plays in as well), and so younger...

Re: Cramping calf muscle?

Its probably a combination of diet, age and technique. As far as the technique goes, if you are activating foot muscles more than they need to be, then that will cause calf tension/cramping that...

Re: Polyrhythm help

Polyrhyhms are fantastic, and are MUCH simpler than they are usually made out to be. I think you can really just remove the 'poly' from the title because anything less is just a metronome.

Re: Has anyone else had wrist/elbow problems from using French grip on the hi-hat?

hand/wrist problems can occur for a lot more reasons than just the grip. shoulder balance, seated posture, etc. What *feels* like wrist problems can really be problems with the wlbow and/or shoulder,...
