Re: John JR Robinson

A song I rediscovered recently with JR holding it down on Simmons drums and live cymbals -- "Tell Me I'm not Dreaming" by Jermaine Jackson feat. Michael Jackson:

Re: Does anybody remember Jeff Indyke?

Ohhhhh Jeff. What an unintentional comedy gold mine he was. Can't say I miss his omnipresence.

Joey Baron.

Joey Baron.

Joey Baron!

Look up the definition of "crystal clarity" and this guy's picture will be there.

Re: The legendary Steve Gadd.

Here's a real gem... Gadd playing in what must be L'image back in '77: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx6To4jBk6c&feature=related

Re: WOAH!! Gadd!!!

The band was dabbling in the latest stylistic directions.. maybe they could do 'em, and maybe they couldn't. This one probably falls into the latter (the melody sounds particularly hokey) but I don't...

Re: John Blackwell

What I love about John Blackwell is that he can absolutely tear it up and yet I never forget that he's human. I had a personal experience of getting to hear him talk - just me, my private lesson...

Re: The legendary Steve Gadd.

Meat the beat isn't talking about physical looks, he's talking about Gadd's pissed off expression on his face. I assume it was all the drugs at the time, as his moments of looking the most miserable...

Chick Corea - The Leprechaun or My Spanish Heart... ('70s jazz-fusion)

Re: The legendary Steve Gadd.

^ Classic Gadd r&b track there. I know every note of that song inside-out. Those early '80s Jarreau albums are just top notch pop.

Re: Deantoni Parks

Deantoni is the MAN! Him and Adam Deitch are probably my two favorite young/modern drummers. I'm not so crazy about the new stuff D is doing (I respect it, it's just not my sound), but the old Kudu...

Re: The legendary Steve Gadd.

I remember reading that he went into rehab around '86 or '87 and was completely sober by '88, so that would mean he's been clean and clear for OVER 20 years now.

Re: Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson

There are many drummers I love to listen to and learn from, but the only one who's influencing my playing today more than ?uestlove would be Gadd. Otherwise, ?uestlove is IT for me.

And he's IT...

Re: The legendary Steve Gadd.

How has this thread gone over half a year without any love?? Oye vey. Definitely time to update with some newish Youtube stuff.

First up is this quirky yet utterly clever mashup of Gadd with Jaco,...

Re: perfect pitch. what about perfect timing?

I have perfect pitch, and I WISH I had perfect timing/tempo. Occasionally I don't count off a song where it should sit, but my problem more has to do with recognizing tempos of the music I'm...

Re: Adam Deitch

My favorite young(ish) drummer. He's basically where I want to be five-ten years from now.

And man I gotta move to NYC so I can take lessons from him!

Re: Where do Boston drummers shop?

Around the corner from the old Jack's, there's Daddy's Junky Music, and out in the middle of BU's campus on Comm Ave is Guitar Center. But other than those two, there isn't much out there. And it's a...

Re: Don't use a metronome?

Yes, just two sides to the same coin -- it's all valid. And for the record, I spend probably 80% of my time NOT playing to a click.

Re: Don't use a metronome?

Did I show disrespect or a lack of understanding? It was not my intention at all. I may not play a lot of it, but I know jazz well enough to know what it's about, and what role the click does (or...

Re: Don't use a metronome?

All excellent points... where to begin?

There is so much good music out there that FEELS good that was layed down to a click, and all the people who utterly vilify its usage usually are those who...

Re: What do you play in a drumstore to impress the guys from the drumstore?

I play my typical stuff, but QUIETLY.. that way they see I have control over my chops. They immediately become more receptive and will often let me play the various kits in the store for hours on end...
