Ive had a Prom for 4 years.....professional drums at a semi pro price..but you DO have to change the heads.

Ive gigged BOTH kits for 2 years at a time on tons of gigs..

I have two snares

a 14x 5.5 Mapex pro-M

a 14x 8 (yes 8") Mapex pro-m

Both are ALL MAPLE, no reinforcement rings, 45 degree bearing edges.

With remo ambassador heads and canopus snare...

My friend played his Yamaha Hi-Gig (original, Rick Moratta style) playing rock...

its sounded HUGE....

he had the remo pinstripe heads on it and a normal size snare.

Yes, I was trying to just be a little humourus while at the same time communicating that the mapex drums are indeed a big bang for the buck....
people shy away because of the Chinese connection but...

My favorite though is my current 14x8!!!

I LOVE my pro-ms but they are the new ones with MAPLE shells

and

you have to change the heads to pro ones

I imagine the old maple/baswood with the cheap plastic clear heads WOULD sound bad.

The older version
Triple flanged rims, sound rings, maple drum shells

Being a jazz drummer they never sounded good tuned up high.....they always sounded dead and choked up...

He doesnt play Paiste 602's. His favorite main ride has always been a Paiste Sound Creation Dark Ride 22" which he still uses mixed in with some Zildjians.
He had Zildjian "copy" his Sound Creation...

No, the book you want is Modern Swing Solos by Charlie Wilcoxin. THAT is the book. I wouldnt be surprised if Blackman meant this book.

I recommend mapex.

Check out the website, printed catalong, do some searches.

Mapex is VERY underated and they have great drums at a nice price.
