Getting a teacher in the, early stages at least, is important for your technique. If you don't get a teacher or you don't watch any instructional vids then you may develop bad habits that will stay...

Everything has really already been said but anyway....I used to break sticks frequently, rim shots tear the sticks up a lot. Now, i dont do rim shots very often and when ever there is a small crack...

Hmm i have been wondering, for right cross-handed drummers, wouldnt it be more beneficial to have the hi hats on the right hand side played on the right hand. That way right-handed drummer could play...

Building up muscles with weights is only good for looks...it wont improve your playing much. I would suggest doing drum arm excercises so that you get a smooth movement with the arms.. wrist...

I probably should have played open handed when i first began, my left hand is stronger. But i play the "crossed-over" way... am also ambidextrous, that does have its advantages..and disadvantages....
