Re: whats the difference between press roll and buzz roll?

Most rolls done in marching band are open, with some stylistic exceptions depending on what exactly is being played. Press rolls do happen in marching band, and are often quite short so that you have...

PASIC 2009

Anybody on this forum going to PASIC this year in Indianapolis? I just scavenged enough money for registration last week, so I'm really looking forward to it!

Re: Singers and their egos.

My brother (a bassist) and I refer to this as LSD or Lead Singer Disorder. It most often comes up when we're loading out after a set and he's chatting up the club owner or some people who just love...

Re: Stage presence

I've noticed in my playing that stage presence can come across in a way other than you intend it. I had a bell cymbal come unscrewed in the middle of a song so that it was laying on the ride it was...

Re: How much can your butt take?

I used to use the Ludwig throne that they packaged with the beginner drums, and I would literally go numb below the waist if I played for longer than about 10 minutes. I got a Pork Pie motorcycle...

Re: Mixing at the kit....

Probably the single best item other than your mixer and mics will be a noise gate to reduce the bleed in your microphones. It's incredibly hard to mix accurately with any amount of bleed in your...

Re: Drummer looking for a christmas gift!

I own both a pork pie throne and a roc-n-soc throne. They are the single best thing you can do to improve practice time and performance. A drummer with a happy butt can play so very much better.

Re: Is it because I'm a drummer?

I think you're probably right about it being your own worst critic. At least, when I feel that way, it's usually because I notice little things about my own playing that no one could possibly know...

Re: Every drummer should be on here with a story

I use in-ear monitors when I play with a band, and one night I somehow ended up with my left stick between the cord and my head, and when I went to play the backbeat on my snare, I ripped it right...

Re: Buying New Cymbals Off The "Testing" Rack????

I can see the idea that you might get a break in price. Most other retail businesses give price breaks on demo or floor models, and it might be reasonable to expect that at your music store. Only...

Re: geezer question

From the competitions I remember from high school, that type of display is being "filtered-out." I've never had to play rudiments like that in an audition format either, usually playing a rudimental...

Re: Charley Wilcoxon - The All American Drummer

That's definitely true. My teacher always emphasized the swinging nature of the solos over the rigid interpretation. The solos in AAD are great because they can be played perfectly to a click and...

Re: Snare setup difficulties

I actually have the same kind of problem. Mine stems less from not sitting high enough on the throne or setting the snare up high enough, and more from the fact that even set at the very highest...

Re: ?uestlove's rim click

It could depend a lot on where they had placed the mic for the video crew, but aside from that.... using a stick that's pretty beefy will give you a great click effect.

Re: In Ear Monitors

I bought a pair of custom fitted monitors from LiveWires that are in about the same price range as the Shure universals, and they block about 25 decibels of outside volume, which is the same as...

Re: When and how often do you use your second snare?

Wow that must have been a lucky snag. I've never had any luck at a pawn shop.

Re: When and how often do you use your second snare?

My second snare is cranked way up to get a very dry poppy sound, and I've been using it during certain bridge type sections or basically any time I want to change up the feel. I really enjoy using it...

Re: need help

probably the best thing to help keep your fills in time would be to practice with a metronome. It's not the most fun thing about drumming, but it will definitely make a better player out of anyone.

Re: What does it say about drummers and drumming that...

I think it also helps that the combinations can lead to a very personal setup. Most drummers like to express their individuality with their sound and their look, and to me the gear section of this...

Re: recording with a click track

I was watching a band record in a kind of home studio type deal without the greatest equipment, and due to the click bleeding through the drum mics, the drummer ended up playing without one. It was...

Re: DrummerWorld Number 1 Again

I don't think you'd have to persuade most of us to vote for DrummerWorld, I would do it without hesitation every single time.
