Re: Does anyone actually like big finales?

Depends. Some songs and bands it's essential, some it doesn't work at all. Context is everything.

Re: Bad hi-hat recording

I don't think there's anything wrong with the mix...I can see why you might not like the sound, but recording and everything else seems okay to me.

Re: Your personal record for most songs learned in the shortest time?

Funnily enough I just did a gig tonight with a 32-song setlist that I had two days to learn, including all the modified endings and extra bits and pieces the band had put in them, which is definitely...

Re: Mindless practice

I like to do this. Sometimes you need your mind focused on the drums, sometimes your mind needs something else to do while your body learns.

Re: Thoughs on Mapex?

I have a set of 2007 Saturns. I love them, they sound awesome.

Re: What was the name of your first bands?

My first ever band was called 'Atone' which was a name I spent literally months trying to think of. I was the guitarist.

My first band I played drums in was called Retrograde Inversion...

Re: My (not so) good left foot

I have a magic solution! Well, it worked for me anyway...I set my kit up left-handed about four weeks ago, and when I switched back to right-handed for some rehearsals this weekend I felt like I'd...

Re: In need of some advice..

Go for it. Once you've thrown yourself in at the deep end, your only options are to sink or swim...there is no better swimming lesson.

Metaphorically, that is. I don't advocate that approach for...

Re: Songs With Bored Drummers

I think he might just be trying to play for the song...

I know he didn't like playing D'yer Mak'er very much though.

Re: Chad vs Will

I think it would have been more amusing to see him genuinely try to play the drums. This felt like a cop-out. There's nothing funny about Will Ferrell miming along to something while the camera shows...

Re: Led Zep Vs Spirit issue

It's a chord progression. The world would be a sorry place if we started copyrighting those.

Oh, you want to play your snare drum on beats 2 and 4? Well that's a shame because I already did that,...

Re: Stuff that you took too long to learn

Oh yeah. I should have counted that out loud more carefully. The pattern is only two beats long, after all...I have gone over this in great detail with one of my students so I really ought to know...

Re: Stuff that you took too long to learn

It's a snare ghost note on the E of 4, not a kick drum. But yes, that 16th after the snare is a hard place to put a kick at first.

For me it's left foot technique. It's frankly embarrassing how...

Re: Do you play the drum part exactly the same each night?

I always liked the way that Led Zeppelin would change not only parts of songs but entire song structures over time, as they worked out ways to make them more interesting...I like the idea of a song...

Re: I think I have a problem and I need help

I always wear hearing protection when drumming, and I get this sometimes. I think it sometimes happens when I open my mouth because certain frequencies resonate inside my head and produce weird...

Re: I finally understand....

Sometimes, a heavily muffled kit sounds great. It just depends on what you're going for. If it's a response to bad drums, worn heads or simply not knowing how to tune then it's only going to be...

Re: Anyone skilled with making drumless tracks?

I'm not sure what you're asking for...do you want someone to record the guitar/bass parts from the song?

Re: Double bass drum ankle motion speed

How about playing with your right foot first and then adding the left foot for a bit in short bursts? Or patterns like this:

RLR R R RLR R R
RLR RLR RLR RLR
RLRLR R RLRLR R

where you've got...

Re: Setting up left-handed

That was my experience the first time, but after only a few more goes I find I'm much more articulate with it already. I've only played the kit like this three times now.

I'm not quite sure...

Re: Setting up left-handed

The biggest difference I have found is the way I play when the hi-hat is on that side. I'm developing all the muscles that get neglected when playing the snare or open-handed hi-hat. I really think...

Setting up left-handed

Since the problem I had with the slave pedal on my Speed Cobras I thought I'd do something I've been intending to do for ages...I've set up my kit backwards as if I was left-handed:
