Re: Recommend good youtube drum channels...?

Oh, I guess I should add Troy Wright on youtube if you to see the most fluidly played covers of Meshuggah that will ever exist. (He does other stuff too). I swear the guy is better than Tomas Haake...

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

Flo Mournier is actually a guy who, to me, it looks like his technique is very finger-y, and not using wrists so much.

Recommend good youtube drum channels...?

Thanks. I'm looking for not the channel of any specific drummer or band, but a general drum channel that might do a mix of stuff from interviews, to studio footage, to gear review and discussion, to...

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

Hey Derek, yeah, I have a very loose floor tom that gives practically no rebound, and I'd like to be able to play as fast on that as I can on a tight snare so I'd like my stroke to not depend on...

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

Thanks Derek.

Though don't some metal drummers use fingers? If you get a good stick height (vertical) and really snap your fingers, you can get decent power with it can't you?

I've noticed when...

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

Cheers for the tips, peeps.

Any more advice on how I can eliminate my natural tendency to use fingers when playing faster?

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

Do you have the link to the youtube of the guy (who isn't Mangini) using the shiver technique?

Or a link to a vid of Mangini using the shiver in a non-WFD context?

As far as only using the...

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

No-one knows how to practice this technique though, right?

Or how to even do it properly?

Isn't it something idiosyncratic to Mangini, and Mangini only - he is the only person in the world to...

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

That's right, I meant 16th notes.

Is there a well known drummer out there who claims not to use fingers when playing fast?

Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

Is there any way to do very fast single stroke rolls (250bpm) without using your fingers at all?

Usually the fingers are there to accept the rebound and push the stick back down, but if you play...

Hand technique with the most speed potential?

I know that any technique has the potential to facilitate very fast playing speeds if you put enough practice into it - but, assuming you put in enough practice and are gifted enough to be able to...

Re: Fast push pull technique - are you meant to push down with your thumb?

I think people misunderstand the technique I'm describing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bxD4x3Sv3k

it's speeds like 4:36 onwards in this video using the technique shown in the video - I'm...

Fast push pull technique - are you meant to push down with your thumb?

At slower speeds, the 'push' part of the push/pull technique is done with the whole wrist.

At very fast speeds (approaching the speeds of a one-handed roll drum roll) - is the 'push' stroke still...

Re: Drum Practice (Speed, Endurance) And Weightlifting

Utterly, utterly tosh. And I don't care if Jojo Mayer said it, he's a great drummer but doesn't know the first thing about muscle physiology.

Drumming fast utilizes your SLOW-TWITCH muscle fibers....

Re: Playing multiple different tempos at the same time with different limbs

I maintain that once you're able to play quarter notes in unrelated tempos with each limb, and switch between any tempo with any limb on the fly, you're truly independent and able to play anything...

Re: Playing multiple different tempos at the same time with different limbs

Yes, but just as if you can play at extreme speeds, your technique is refinined so playing at any speed is easier, if your independance is refined to such an extent by this exercise, you should find...

Re: Playing multiple different tempos at the same time with different limbs

Yes, but would any be as challenging as this?

In fact, I think the difficulty would also be increased if the tempos were farther apart from each other, and you could play tuplets and add a speed...

Playing multiple different tempos at the same time with different limbs

Surely in order to practice independance the best thing to do is get two metronomes, set one to 120bpm, and the other to 117bpm and play quarter notes at 120bpm with the left hand, quarter notes at...

Should I work on heel up or heel down?

Imagine you only have time to work on one of the two for a bit. This is my case so please no responses saying: 'you're making excuses - practice both!!'

When I play heel down I get a good degree...

Re: Myth - playing fast and 'fast twitch' muscles

If you're not out of breath doing single strokes that doesn't mean that doing single strokes is an anaerobic activity (thus using fast twitch muscles).

I don't get out of breath watching TV or...

Myth - playing fast and 'fast twitch' muscles

That playing fast involves 'fast twitch' muscles is a total myth.

Fast twitch muscles sound like they would logically be used for fast playing, but the truth is that any muscle (slow or fast...

Currently I practice for speed by doing bursts of 20secs followed by 20secs rest. Right now I can get up to 260bpm playing using the finger bounce technique in this way.

However, are looking at...
