Re: Snare-Drums STEEL vs WOOD!

Yeh i'm the same as Frank. I actually enjoy tuning the snare to different tones and feels.

2 of my fav snares at the moment are a 13x7 10ply Maple and a 14x5.5 1/2inch thick Padauk.

The 13...

Re: Snare-Drums STEEL vs WOOD!

Yes... but Adamantium would be cooler. You could even cut an X in the side of the shell (with an Adamantium cutting disk of course).

Re: Mike Portnoy sound

I don't think it's tuned super high. I've been listening to his recordings since I could play drums 14 years ago and when i've tried to copy his sound (with all maple DW shells) i generally tune the...

Re: Exotic drum woods and sound dynamics

I agree with steadypocket.

A lot of smaller drum companies often use stave and steambent shells which are, most of the time, exotic wood.

You don't always have to pay top dollar for a name...

Re: Painting My Drums

yep, you can paint over them. it saves the time and effort of pulling off the old wrap and you get to start with a smooth finish compared to the raw shell underneath.

A few things to keep in mind:...

Re: Whats the difference between PDP and DW?

I bought a CX for gigging and practise. Can not complain at all! I love it.

Re: Sad about cymbals

I agree with The Colonel.

I learnt the same way you might have to buzzbuzz, good cymbals are for recording and your use, gig cymbals are used for everything and everyone else!

But for this...

Re: Getting another tom

The size of your kit doesn't always limit what you can play. I have heard massive kickass chops on a 4 piece kit. Just because a kit is small, doesn't mean you can't have a "full fill".

If he's...

Re: Brian Blade or Dave Weckl?

Just to throw a cat in the bag...

I actually find John Blackwell more entertaining than both of them :)

I definitely respect both Blade and Weckl being absolutely great artists, but I dunno......

Re: Need advise. How much would pay for this DW?.

I'd be throwing money at them for $1500. Here in Australia you'd be looking at least $2500 for a second hander :(

Also, don't just "put up" with hanging floor toms. There can be quite a different...

Re: Anyone removed wrap from PDP shells?

Unfortunately they do! I've done one myself. You'll have to drill out the air vent holes first, the wrap gets caught under the lip of the vent (they use a folded air vent). That was something I...

Re: choosing a snare material

I'd recommend Oak for that sound you are after. Bubinga is great but might be a bit high toned.

If you want a "Super super super dark and fat" sound, try a extra deep Oak with 42 wires :)
