Re: Jim Gordon

I just happened to look back at this thread and you seem to be mixing up Mark David Chapman with John Hinkley.

This is alluding to a comment I made about Mark David Chapman, that "his name evokes...

Re: How to naturally play quieter?

Try to draw sound out of the drum rather than bang into it. Cut your volume in half. And then half again. You can play quiet and still be powerful. Think finesse.

Then check your band-mates'...

Re: Dylan Elise

Monster player and nice, down to earth guy. He lives around Boston now and stops in every so often to our local drum store on the North Shore. I've only seen him play solos, but the fact that BS&Ts...

↑This↑ (Boomka's advice). The other videos and advice are helpful as well, but this specifically targets the page(s) in question. I was going to post a video before his post and I may still do it. ...

Another take on Seven

Bill Ray's thread on 7 against 4 got me to thinking about this. And rather than throwing out any definitions, I thought it better to just play it. (Though I hope a better drummer than me can post a...

Re: How to improve rhythm and timing of each note? (Issues with bass drum strokes being slightly off

Here's a video I posted a while back by a drummer named Rob Brown. Here, he demonstrates a cool way to practice with a metronome:

This idea has...

Re: Twisted Sister Drummer dies

I remember reading a Modern Drummer interview with A. J. back in the mid-eighties and really enjoyed his perspective on music and how he engaged the audience in his solos. Gene Krupa was a family...

Re: Alan Dawson: How Do You Sound? vs How Do You Look?

I just saw 4 videos of Chaney and again, while he certainly has technique and stamina to get through his theatrics while playing, I don't see or hear anything that novel. Yes, the fact that he may...

Re: Alan Dawson: How Do You Sound? vs How Do You Look?

But he really isn't doing anything new under the sun:

This takes nothing away from Zoltan Chaney, since he certainly knows how to play and good on...

Re: Brush comping question

Your page 34 Syncopation exercise (p. 33 in the old book) is excellent. I'm used to a clockwise motion with my left hand and (more or less) counter-clockwise with my right. Reversing that is a bit...

Re: Need some help with teaching tuned percussion to a 7 year old

I had a little bit of experience teaching kids. What seemed to work best was to not get bogged down in explanations. Just set a couple of instruments up for her to play and rather than tell her...

Re: How to build up weaker hand?

In general, I think you should play using both hands. Yes, occasionally isolate the left hand if you have problems. But I imagine that most of the music you want to play involves right and left...

Re: The "Jimi Hendrix of drums"

Great balls of Odin. Tony Williams isn't that creative, musically?!? His style of drumming is, "...trains pulling a load"?

Even with the hindsight of fifty plus years and all the people who were...

Re: The "Jimi Hendrix of drums"

Mitch Mitchell? ;-)

If it were a 60's rock drummer, I'd guess Keith Moon because he was so free, powerful and unique.

Or it could be Tony Williams because I read an interview where he said he...

Re: Practicing the chaal

Sometimes just hearing another music tradition can open up another avenue to play in. So just listen to as many types of music as possible. But at some point, really focus on one. It doesn't...

Just to pile on. Wow. I've heard of him (and Matt Nolan) but to watch him go through the process is amazing. I know, OSHA would not be happy that he's not wearing safety goggles. :) But it's like...

Re: Most important lessons for beginners

Yes, absolutely. Whatever it is that sparked the fire to get you to want to play should drive you. It has to have that balance.

Re: Most important lessons for beginners

I don't think a "beginner" has to worry about order of importance. If a sincere, driven beginner joins forces with a good teacher, all they have to do is surrender their ego and open up to whatever...

Re: Confusion on rolls - open or closed?

We have a different concept of what a buzz roll is. I just threw this together, so forgive the sloppiness:
