Heyo peeps, I've got a problem learning a particular song, Vampire by Xandria

At 3:52 they have this bar of weirdness with the snare, after the whole band does this unison thing. I'm pretty sure...

Re: Left Hand Uselessness

You've been playing for four years man, relax. Assuming you play matched grip, you can try observing how the right hand's strokes look and feel, and try to mimick that with your left hand. Or you can...

Favourite Modern Drummer DVDs

Heyo guys, I was wondering (assuming you've got multiple MD DVDs) which of the festivals' DVDs you all liked best, and for what reason. Or even better, if you had the chance to caught one live!

Re: Practicing in an apartment

What has worked for me is this:

- practice pad (I use the HQ Realfeel) + snare stand
- real hi-hat and stand, muffled with towel
- bass drum pedal + bass drum practice pad (Pearl and Gibraltar...

Re: Snare Drum Instructional Books

Heyo, I'm stuck in China with a practice pad and a pair of sticks. And the internet. Anyone can gimme access to a [free, online copy of a] snare solo? I've been playing drums for about four years. I...

RATM: Killing in the Name

Hey guys, I'm trying to learn Killing in the Name by Rage against the Machine, and I'm having some problems with the transitions at the start of the song. There's this groove that starts 0:17, going...

Re: Swiss Triplets and Flam Taps Stick Control Exercise

Instead of writing "F" for flams, you ought to put the lead hand (e.g. RRL for right hand leading swiss triplets). In this case we know it's about swiss triplets, so we can sort of deduce from the...

Re: tips on posture

Yeah I hear that quite often too, but if you notice different drummers, some sit pretty high (i.e. thighs not parallel to floor). Steve Smith and Jojo Mayer are examples. It's also what I do; I find...

Re: Practising rimshots

Thanks for the help. The similar technical approach thing was really helpful. I totally threw all my technique away when I started working on rimshots haha.

As for stick control, I think I'm not...

Re: Practicing for band practice

What mistakes are you making? If your brain is on overdrive during group practice, from trying to navigate through the song, I suggest you simplify. Concentrate on keeping the time good and also...

Re: The grooviest groove?

Most of the Rage against the Machine songs kill me, e.g. Vietnow, Killing in the Name. And Kashmir by Led Zep.

Practising rimshots

Heyo I just started practising rimshots as I just got access to regular use of a drumset. I was wondering what is the most effective and least damaging way to practice them. Right now I'm basically...

Re: Matched grip in jazz

Yeah I was watching Dave Weckl on the Vic Firth podcast and that's pretty much exactly what he said. The problem is that I've never noticed this nuance thing, so I think I'm too low level to worry...

Matched grip in jazz

Does anyone know of any jazz drummers who play matched grip? I realize all the jazz drummers I know play traditional. Is it weird to play jazz matched? I don't wanna have to learn a new grip for a...

Re: Any Modern Drummer or DRUM readers here?

You shouldn't get bummed out about it, you know. Depending on your current level and level of dedication, it can be impossible to 'keep up' with each issue. Some of the licks and concepts I know I...

Re: Holding sticks -- Carmine / Vinny Appice

It's even better if you're a trad player, then you can flip to a butt-end match grip very easily. not so easy if you're matched already and you wanna flip the stick around. I've seen a match grip...

Re: Musician's Rules: Drummers Perspective

Yeah actually I find the term 'overplaying' weird, because it has to be benched against a certain standard. And if you define the standard as 'what is acceptable', obviously overplaying is bad, since...

Re: Limb Independence Problem

If you're talking about eighth note triplets on the left hand (i.e. 3 triplet notes per 2 eighth notes), you can kind of 'cheat' by thinking of the base pattern in terms of the triplets first, then...

Re: Best drumming album of all time?

To be honest I couldn't really catch it even I knew morse code because in actual code, there should be a brief pause between letters to indicate the separation.

And reading this thread made me...

Re: How to practice single/double stroke rolls?

I realise I do not, in fact, play singles with the German grip. My right hand does German but left does American, almost French. Is this a problem? other than the fact that it looks weird.

Re: How to practice single/double stroke rolls?

Have you tried any of the exercises that use both double strokes and single strokes? like 16th notes: RLRLRRLL. I also use German for singles and French for doubles. Given that they're just a turn of...
