Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

Does the label on the tom head (showing under the rim by the lug) bother you? :)

I have the opposite of OCD. I don't care about anything.

Re: How tense are you when you play?

If I'm just playing drums, I'm extremely comfortable. IMO, it's really hard to screw up the drums noticeably (to regular people).

When I'm also triggering the backing tracks, it sometimes take the...

Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

If I was in charge of branding drums, I'd choose a different looking lug that would be obvious without even seeing the brand name written.....like Nike

Put them at an angle or make them the shape...

Re: human drummers and fractals

I just popped in to see what a fractal was.

I found it very interesting.

Re: Drumming in the pre digital age.

1) Now they go out earlier, spend $100 on dinner and watch a band.
2) I prefer the new days.
3) The internet doesn't detract from my playing time, it just gives me a break so I don't get burned out...

Re: How do I know if I will stick with drums? Advice please.

Any drummer can jam on the piano a bit.

Just have your mates play in in sharp/flat keys and stay on the black keys :)

Re: How do I know if I will stick with drums? Advice please.

Much respect to you for learning different instruments. I think you will understand music 10X more than a single instrument player.

You can get a used off brand kit for $100.

You can get a...

Re: When disaster strikes: Your opinion

My drums or any other musical gear are nowhere close to important to me and I don't have any family heirlooms or pets.

I'm grabbing my phone, my cash and my (2) guns. I'd take the guns just to be...

Re: Drumming in the pre digital age.

This internet fad is pretty impressive. :)

And, since maybe 8 years ago, you can find out anything you want to know from your damn cell phone.

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

I finally watched it. I only made it maybe 1/3 of the way in, to the part where he was breaking up with his girlfriend.

It was just too lame from the start.

I do have two questions.

1) When...

Re: Making $ playing drums

Here, most musicians have day jobs and only make $100 per night.

Re: Should I Do It?

If a couple/few hours of playing affects his exam, he should have paid more attention to his studies during the semester :)

100 people might mean 40 girls. I'd be there in a heartbeat with the E...

Re: Unreliable band members

Flakey musicians?

No way :)

Music is full of flakes because, in theory, musicians don't have to have real jobs.

Re: What's your process for coming up with drum grooves for songs?

1. Listen to the bass line.

2. Determine if it calls for a straight or syncopated feel.

3. Start stepping on the pedal(s)

90% of the time in 4/4 pop/rock, I seem to automatically/naturally...

Re: 1 measure lick ideas for solos

I don't think there is anything wrong with written solos, especially short ones. Even long ones are pre written segments strung together, maybe in a different order.

I'd make the parts 2...

Re: You and your practice regimen, come clean

I'm not a regiment kind of guy but I do play almost every day.

I always play with some kind of music. I have a ton of things I've recorded so I can simply mute the drum track and play along.

Re: Your approach to supporting a solo.

There are exceptions to almost everything but generally, a drum solo is the drummer playing by himself.

A guitar or other instrument playing a featured part is an instrumental.

It's really...

I feel the need to point out, if you or anyone else is playing along, it's not actually a solo :)

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

To further the analogy...

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

Music is music so play what you want to.

Make sure you are not sticking to originals because you think it's cool. Playing other people's music is how most musicians learn their craft and develop...
