Re: What is the most unintelligible instruction given to you by a music director?

A co-band leader once said this to me:

"Still play using those brushes but play LOUDER."

After a few minutes he repeated: "Seriously, play LOUDER!"

I replied "I'm playing as loud as I can...

Congrats on the kit. Really nice. And equal congrats on getting the Silentstroke. I noticed those in my local GC a few years ago and decided to rehead my kit using Silentstrokes. Never been...

Re: Gigging with a Ludwig Accent?

Thank you everybody! It's turning out to be a fun kit to play. And I can't wait to gig with it.

Re: Bars and Churches where else...

You are 100% Spot on PorkPieGuy. A lot of my live, playing in front of people-experience since 2007 has been playing in church bands. Some p and w musicians are pros or semi-pros doing it to keep...

Gigging with a Ludwig Accent?

I hate to sound like a noodge here, but is there anything wrong with gigging out with a Ludwig Accent kit? Particularly on a Friday or Saturday night in a smokey bar with a bunch of drunks and...

Re: The gig that you turned down, and it's a good thing you did!

I'm blessed as well. I got lucky in the fact that my wife loves live music and following various local bands and we actually met at one of my gigs. She supports my music endeavors 100%.

Re: The gig that you turned down, and it's a good thing you did!

This wasn't a gig, but "potential" gigs. A few years ago I was in a band where the leader decided to put "his old band" back together and needed a drummer since their old drummer was either in jail...

Re: Just pulled the retirement trigger

Many Congrats! Enjoy retirement and HAVE FUN!

I got 11 more years until retirement. Good info on finding things to do and keeping busy. The thing that scares me the most is 1) major health...

Re: Minimalist - Not interested in new gear?

Guilty here of being a pack rat. We're not hoarders but we definitely need to get rid of "stuff". I have 1 drum set set up to practice on, and 2 more in playing condition stored in a closet with 2...

Re: Pet Peeves

1) Singers and guitar players offering up unsolicited "advice".
2) Bass players trying to change up the tempo mid-song.
3) Upon finding out I play drums, always tell me "you should hear (insert...

For personal research, I am soliciting answers to the following specific questions. Thanks so much for your contribution!

Re: Ever been asked to "rate" yourself?

Well that's true, kinda absurd, Ha.

I think the FB discussion was more bravado than anything, but it was more along the lines of all genres in general and how do you feel you stack up against all...

Ever been asked to "rate" yourself?

I read an interesting FB post discussion lately concerning drummers rating themselves on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best.

As you can imagine, all sorts of replies...

Re: Words of encouragement

Thanks for clearing that up opentune...I seem to have been misinformed or read something inaccurate.

The way it was presented was Ringo was indeed a local sought-after drummer but when they...

Re: Words of encouragement

Amen to that one!

I'm also in IT and we never get any attention or exposure. When things go well we are out of sight, out of mind. If something breaks or whatever, all of a sudden we are in the...

Words of encouragement

Do you ever give words of encouragement to someone outside of drumming or music and relate it back to your drumming or music?

One of the best I've heard is:

"Hey, Ringo wasn't the Beatles...

Re: Do you feel underappreciated?

If I'm playing with a group of guys and I get the tired old drummer jokes we've all heard a billion times, then I know I'm doing a good job and appreciated. As odd as that sounds. :)

Singer tries drums and fails miserably

Ordinarily I wouldn't post something like this, but it is both funny, true, and sad at the same time.

Long story short - this past Sunday when I showed up for early rehearsal I was told we have a...

Re: Praise for the 12/13/16 set-up ;)

I'd love to aquire another 5 piece set in 8 x 12, 9 x 13, and 16 x 16, with a 20" or 22" kick and 51/2 or 6" x 14 snare. To me that is the perfect setup.

Years ago I had the standard Jazz set up:...

Re: Weightlifting and drumming

Lots of good information here. Thank you!

In my late teens and all the way thru my 20's up until age 30 I exercised regularly by jogging and working out, ate anything I wanted and was fine. That...
