Re: Jim Gordon

I'm in the same boat as you, Larry. Jim's playing sets the standard when it comes to rock/blues drumming and I think more guitarists would notice it long before most drummers. That tells you...

Re: Carlos Vega

Carlos was truly one of the greatest drummers; a real jack of all trades in terms of style, groove, feel and pocket. He had chops for days, but always played for the music first and foremost.

Re: Jeff Porcaro

Thanks, newoldie.

IMHO, Lido Shuffle is by far the most difficult of his shuffles to get right. It took me hours to get the proper coordination down and several more to actually make it feel...

Re: STICK CONTROL (George L Stone) Your experiences and suggestions

I just began incorporating a slight variation of Billy Gladstone's Stick Control Method (as was posted by Jazzsnob) into my current practice routine. Here's how it breaks down:

Re: Motivation

To all those wondering where my head is currently: It's attached to my neck, which sits in between my shoulders. When I stand, it sits at about six feet five inches from the ground.

To all those...

Re: Motivation

SquadLeader,

I think you're taking my post the wrong way...

You: A desire "to be remembered for something" strikes me as very narcissistic.

Me: I was brought up to be a contributing member...

Re: Motivation

I'd like to rekindle this thread, as it's a very important topic. If you are ever lacking motivation and all you're doing is watching television, playing video games, or wasting your time in some...

Re: Those Who Teach

I know this thread is getting pretty old, but if you or your son/daughter have a teacher that demands a weekly lesson, you may want to look elsewhere....

Here's the bottom line, and this is my...

Re: Looking for some quality DVD's and Books

If I could go back in time, I would only buy three books:

1. Stick Control
2. Syncopation
3. The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary

These three books make up the legendary teaching method of the...

Re: Who do you select for a Studio Drum Coach?

My top three coaches would have to be:

1. Jeff Porcaro
2. Jeff Porcaro
3. Jeff Porcaro

Once Jeff arrived, I would apologize to the producer, explain to him why he was right for wanting to...

Re: Can a mediocre drummer be a good teacher?

I didn't start teaching until after I had been playing for ten years. My main piece of advice is to have a good grasp of reading music before you get into it. When first starting out, you may want to...

Re: STICK CONTROL (George L Stone) Your experiences and suggestions

Alan Dawson came up with THE definitive ways to use Stick Control, as well as Ted Reed's Syncopation. I'd recommend purchasing the book 'The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary as Taught by Alan Dawson' by...

Camco Replication Project

So I've decided that sometime in the near future I will begin to invest in recreating a 1960's LA Camco drum set out of custom shop shells, hardware, etc. My reasoning for this project is simple:

Re: 10 lesser known but oft heard drummers

You all missed Joe Vitale, who I would argue is right about on-par with Jim Gordon for being one of the most important, overlooked drummers of rock in the 70's. He played with Joe Walsh, Barnstorm,...

Re: Jeff Porcaro

This is sort of an odd question, but maybe others would like to know as well.

I'm in the market for a new pair of headphones and I was wondering if anyone knew what kind Jeff used in the studio?...
