Re: Traditional Grip
I bought the Buddy Rich Memorial video that this excerpt is from on VHS back when it came out in 1989. I watched it religiously, but I didn't have any idea it would be so huge all these years later....

Re: Cajon fatigue?
They come in handy for acoustic gigs where the volume levels are lower. I play one for a couple tunes with my rock band. But, to be honest, I don't care for them very much.

Re: Just arrived: a Guru Drumworks snare
That's the drum that caught my ear in one of the demo videos Andy put up. It sounds incredible. And it looks like a million bucks. What a gorgeous array of colors from those woods.

Re: Gretsch Drums.... Any Good?
Thanks, Ants. I knew you'd have the definitive answer. Agreed that you can't go wrong with either. They're at the very top of my wish list.

Re: Drum finishes - a natural debate
Hmm. Very interesting.
There is a purpleheart snare exhibition model listed on the Guru website at a discount. Is that model still available? There may be a PM coming from me here shortly :)

Re: Drum finishes - a natural debate
Andy's philosophy that sound trumps all is unimpeachable, as far as I'm concerned. The thing is, a lot of people do buy with their eyes. I mean, a while back, I saw a purpleheart Guru snare and...

Re: Gretsch Drums.... Any Good?
No, it's not quite that simple. They have a different shell construction. I believe the USA Customs are all-maple while the Brooklyns use maple and poplar.

Re: Tuning on display kits - mini rant - video
I love the sound of that kit, Andy.
I can't imagine why anyone would put a set of drums out for demo purposes and not tune them. I don't get around to many trade shows or things like that, so I...

Re: practice
One of the most beneficial practice things I've done over the years is practice playing bass drum parts with my left foot while driving a car. The cars I've owned have all had a rest plate for the...

Re: If only you knew what I know ;)
I'm guessing it's Bruford. I might attend just to ask a technique question about his grip and receive a verbal thrashing. I bet he's especially cutting and sarcastic in such a forum.

Re: Connie Kay
Yeah, Connie Kay is an important drummer. He played with Pres back in the early 50s on some of his best work, imo.
What you may not know about Connie is he played on Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison....

Re: Drum finishes - a natural debate
Heh, yeah, I believe it is. Charlie played it for about 15 minutes, but I like that one.
Of course, Bonzo's thermogloss kit was as famous as any he played.
I'm just partial to sparkles and...

Re: Practice it until it "feels good."
My take on this has always been to practice whatever you are working on until you can play it in a way that feels good, just like any music played well feels good. In other words, comfortably,...

Re: Drum finishes - a natural debate
It depends on the musical setting.
My rule of thumb: If the musicians are wearing sparkly stuff, then the drums should, too.
If it's rock, pop, funk or dance music we're talking about, then I...

Re: Decisions decisions!
I'll be the dissenting voice here: Use the Spauns!
As you said, it's easier, and Andy, it's not like you don't have enough on your plate right now. You're a busy guy. Push the easy button!

Re: Alex Van Halen
Hard to believe, indeed.
I was a huge VH fan as a kid. I used to draw their logo on my notebook instead of paying attention in class. You know the routine.
AVH was a heavy influence in my...

Re: My right foot(bass drum) twitches
First of all, what Larry said above. You have to learn good control with your feet. If you don't have that together, then nothing else is going to matter. Also:
When you play a note on the bass...
