Re: Yamaha original Maple Custom kit - Is it worth it??

I really like the 8 and 16" toms...but I also really like the black. If only you could have both, right?

And the two toms on a stand don't look like a problem.

Re: Something strange is happening

Have you been practicing parts with harder, faster sticking and/or practicing more frequently?

I used to use 7As. When I got really into marching snare I started swinging corpsmasters at a pad a...

Re: Mapex Saturn vs Premier Genista

That is actually exactly what it sounds like. Sometimes when I'm tuning it the heads end up at one of those weird intervals where they go bwOWWWwwww, and I just think it sounds pretty cool so I leave...

Re: Mapex Saturn vs Premier Genista

My toms are 8-10-12-14 but I tune them low so my 14" sounds like a kick to the nuts. I don't use my 16" tom anymore, but the last time I pulled it out, I tried tuning it to match the others and it...

Re: Cymbal to tom or tom to snare

The dumb scrape challenge: crash-high tom-snare-snare-other crash-middle tom-snare-snare (LLLLRRRR) sixteenth notes with eighths on the kick.

Got the rhythm really clean around 120-130, but not a...

Re: Cymbal to tom or tom to snare

This is called a scrape, at least in marching for quads/quints. I've done triple strokes like this where I go crash-rack tom-snare all in the same stroke. Never found a super musical application for...

Re: Containment unit drum kit

When I was 13 or 14 I just had to have a drum kit, but my parents weren't gonna drop that kind of money so I had to improvise. I already had my pearl steel shell, a 12" wuhan, and (for some reason) a...

Re: Drummer's type of fun!

I love dismantling/assembling/tuning/setting up drum stuff...sometimes guitar and bass stuff, too. The exception being the tear down - load - unload - set up - repeat routine for gigs. I got to have...

Re: Playing with hiccups

I don't know about hiccups, but I've gotten pretty good at sneezing while playing without missing a beat. I try to time them with rests or big cymbal crashes. My bandmates think it's just hilarious....

Re: PDP X7 drumset

I'm pretty sure the finish he described was only for the maples. I have the maple X7 in black on black.

Play around a lot with where you mount your toms. Learn the importance of ergonomics. Look...

Re: Old and new

I thought this was pretty interesting when I first read it, and at least sort of relevant as to older, established musicians not being too familiar with with what's going on presently. Vai seems very...

Re: Modern Metal songs with the "best" Drums

Mastodon is where it's at.

What little I have heard of gojira and born of osiris was very memorable drum-wise.

And I really love vildhjarta, but I think that thall the real awesomeness there is...

Re: something I am building

I meant snugging a nut up against the black thing to prevent the reso side rods from rotating at all. That would prevent the "lugs" from ending up at different heighths over time relative to each...

Re: something I am building

I think that's a pretty schnazzy single-tension design. I would tighten a nut up against the black things on all the reso bolts once you get them even length, maybe with a split washer too. Then all...

Re: Teeth Drumming

I used to do this all the time when I was very little, long before getting actual drums. It was almost some sort of nervous tick and I remember doing it a lot while trying to fall asleep. Eventually...

Re: Practice pad drum set suggestions

Do you want cymbal-like pads that articulate like an actual hihat, or just a realistic feeling pedal with a surface to hit? If the latter, you could probably drill a hole through a practice pad to...

Re: Drumming and writing music.

I find it very helpful to actually write out the music when writing music. My band and I all use TabIt, which I think is the best tablature software out there and if you were to actually pay for it I...

Learn a few Zeppelin or Maiden songs without doing heel-toe. Practice practice and remember to keep relaxed.

Re: Not denting heads

That premier head is just RUDE. Does that happen at trade shows often? What kind of animals do they let in to those places?

My band wears earplugs all the time. Even for shows. We are entirely...
