Re: "Projection" of drums

It's just science and physics... Some sounds and frequencies travel better than others, some are absorbed easier by materials, some reflect better than others. The makeup of the waveform will...

Re: "Projection" of drums

Gotcha.

I wish I could play jazz at a performance level but it's still a bit of a foreign language. I'm still more along the lines of cave-man rock drumming. That makes more sense... Given your...

Re: "Projection" of drums

I've had very bad luck tuning my top heads higher. For me, it makes an upward pitch bend that sounds bad from my stand-point next to the drum.

When you're tuning this way, how do you know when...

Re: Just Came From Terrible Audition - I sucked!

I'm seeing a lot of people down on themselves here lately because a band or band leader acted very unprofessionally or set them up to fail in a try-out.

You don't want those bands anyway. Huge...

Re: Just Came From Terrible Audition - I sucked!

How would you be expected to memorize everything by the numbers the first time you played with them? I'd expect the vocal and other cue types to be present!

For JP Gaster fans... Check this out

https://youtu.be/kFFaWbG0C6w

I stumbled upon this by way of the ol' youtube rabbit-hole... I wasn't paying that much attention and clicked more because I was curious about the weird name "Walrus...

Re: Best shuffles?

The best shuffles are the ones that evenly distribute the face cards through the deck.

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

I'm not sure if I know which guy we're talking about here... I'm speaking as a generality; technical perfection paranoia is very real and people often focus so much on the mechanics of playing music...

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

Well, obviously the "idiot" in that sentence is a hypothetical writer, and not anyone in reality, especially you.

Not really making that many assumptions... Just responding to posts.

Nice to...

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

Interesting response. Indeed a small few do make it through this self-imposed gauntlet. But I stress that a huge number of people who could have been making music sit around trying to perfect...

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

What kind of idiot writer spends all his time learning techniques to write and then endlessly practicing them in vacuum?

He's way better off reading as much as he can (listening to music, studying...

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

Uh, okay. So I should go painstakingly and fluently learn every language on earth because I might someday want to use a few phrases from one or the other?

Why wouldn't I just look around me at...

Re: Bought wrong snare head!

It won't sound like a coated "regular" snare head, but it should sound like a snare... Some people prefer the sound it will give, actually... I see it in certain genres and with certain drummers.

Re: At which point do polyrhythms stop sounding cool and start sounding academic?

That's not prog... That's just odd numbered time sigs.

Re: At which point do polyrhythms stop sounding cool and start sounding academic?

For me, it's when the songs don't have a good flow and it gets hard to tell what's going on.

I prefer my prog stuff as subtleties... Like if it takes me 3 listens to notice that a part swapped to...

Re: First jam done

Yep. And good jam leaders will read the room and try to cater. When we see tons of leather jackets with patches on em, you know it's time for some good ol' punk rock. Lots of denim and cowboy...

Re: Beat Timing Question

Not disagreeing with the sentiment, but I've only ever heard or used "dynamics" to indicate a playing level... Not placement of notes. It's just bringing things up or down.

Again, though, what...

Re: Damage control: take care of your stuff

Along these lines, I leave them off if the room is dead... I put them on and cinch them a bit if I need the tone down the cymbals in an echo prone/small room.

Re: Please help - is this bearing edge normal? (Picture attached)

If the result is the same over multiple flat surfaces, then yes, that's not right.

Re: Trick VMT Pub Kick

Kid you not I was just listening to this last night. Weird world. I think that's the only "BOG" "album" that was ever available, right?

Buddy Miles, man... Buddy Miles.

Re: Worst Badge in the Business

Badges
Lugs
Hoops

Two of those things impact the sound of the drum, the un-important one does not.

It's always a valid choice to go form over function in terms of priority... But I'd take an...

Re: Worst Badge in the Business

For the life of me, I cannot understand why people care about things like badges. To me that's like not buying a hammer because I don't like the way "stanley" is stamped on the side.
