Re: Help with French grip technique

That was confusingly worded-- what I meant is that it's not a hard grip. Everybody uses it, and it's easy.

Re: Help with French grip technique

People don't use that grip because it's hard to figure out, and just because everyone calls it "French" grip now doesn't mean there's only one way to do it. Find a natural motion that works for you....

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

Cool, I'll check that out-- good to see the state of the art presentation of it, at least.

Re: At which point do polyrhythms stop sounding cool and start sounding academic?

I don't use the things as licks, they're just forms of compound pulse that are running all the time, whether anyone is playing them or not. It's an African concept. If you're fluent with them you can...

Re: Best shuffles?

Midnight Special (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2017/10/groove-o-day-jimmy-smith-midnight.html) the way Grady Tate and Donald Bailey play it with Jimmy Smith is pretty hip.

Re: "Jazz Kit" Poll: Yamaha or Gretsch

Because I've played a lot of them and toured with them and they sound terrible.

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

I said techniques, referring to the special techniques the OP was asking about. Technique is something else-- a means for getting a good sound out of the instrument and playing the normal repertoire....

Re: "Jazz Kit" Poll: Yamaha or Gretsch

I would go for the Yamaha, mainly because there is no possibility that they sound worse than the Catalinas. None of the other considerations you mentioned matter to me. I would consider the cheap...

Re: What are some of the coolest beats tha you've ever heard?

Here are a few, with transcriptions:
James Black - Hook & Sling (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2016/07/transcription-james-black-hook-and_29.html) / Eddie Bo
Omar Hakim - Predator...

Re: Mastering the Tables of Time

No, there's an actual book called, "Mastering the Tables of Time." It's good, but I never practice out of it-- once you get the hang of the idea that you can play things in different rhythms, I don't...

Re: Looking for a specific drum set method book

Never used it, looking at the Amazon preview I'm not real impressed with it. Not terrible, but a style guide shouldn't be bogging down in minutia like ghost notes. There's a funk book by Roy Burns...

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

Work on music, add techniques as needed.

Re: Check my logic and correct me if necessary.

Yeah, but it really doesn't. 7/8 is not played in a fast 7, it's played in a lopsided 3-- the main pulse is typically two quarter notes and a dotted quarter note, in any order. 7/8 and 7/4 both have...

Re: Check my logic and correct me if necessary.

Only mathematically, not practically-- the note values are mathematically halved, but that's not what half time means. It actually goes the other way: 2/2 is half time to 4/4, 3/2 is half time to...

Re: Accent on second stroke doubles technique question

There have been a bunch of threads discussing this ad nauseum recently. What he's doing in the video is actually full stroke / downstroke. I don't know why he's doing the downstroke, because it's not...

Re: Music that Improves your senses.

It's more a way of listening than the actual music. I'd be looking for anything I'm not overly familiar with, that uses the full sonic possibilities of the ensemble, and/or that is narrowly focused...

Re: A shame, but long rumoured :(

Don't know the story with them, but look up vulture capitalism (http://https://www.npr.org/2012/01/19/145463691/vulture-capitalism-how-private-equity-firms-work)-- a kind of predatory investing...

Re: Fast memorization when improvising? - methods - tricks - shortcuts ?

Can't get more internalized than playing something without planning it or practicing it. You played it once, you'll probably play it again. Let it go.

I've played a ton of improvised music, and...

Re: What tempo to practice at?

You can keep pushing the limit on paradiddles your entire life-- they're useful up to around 16th notes @ quarter note = 190-200 bpm.

I don't totally agree with the headroom idea-- just because...

Re: How do the pros practice for so long?

All due respect to the psychologists, but practicing is what people who can play say it is. It's fine if they want to do a study about it, but there are other factors involved besides what is most...

Re: How do the pros practice for so long?

I don't know, how does anyone do any one thing for that long? Some combination of work ethic, career and/or creative ambition, focus, interest, and love for it. Probably helped along by being in a...
